  3. Purpose of this preso • Present a definition and a brief education on how podcasting can be applied and be of benefit to our organization. Introduce the Podcasting Sandbox “Learning Pods” as a collaborative effort to learn and apply podcasting to our educational efforts (internal & external to EUT)

Subscribers to Podcast RSS Feeddownload podcast via an Aggregator* Podcaster Records Audio (Video) content (converts swf to pod format) Individuals who are searching for content but are not subscribers What is podcasting? • Definition from Wikipedia.org - Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio programs or music videos, over the Internet using either the RSS or Atomsyndication formats, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. Great we can listen to this when we have the time, and we don’t have to search for it!!! RSS (Really simple syndication) allows Podcaster to post content up on web so people can subscribe to it I can really relate! This content tells a story and is related to me by the content owner in audio. Aggregator = software which allows You to collect feeds of podcasts and transfer to your computer or mp3 player

Implications for learning • Support needs of auditory learners • Provide another channel for material review • Assist non-native speakers • Provide feedback to learners • Replace full classroom or online sessions when content simply requires delivery • Provide supplementary content or be part of a blended solution Listening to digital audio content won’t replace reading, listening to live presentations, or the multitude of other ways learners take in information, but it can augment those methods. The following are ways that podcasting can contribute to the learning process.

Other benefits of podcasting • Reinforces relationships between presenter and audience- • audio personalizes the information • emotional weight in audio vs. plain text • Helps establish trust with a more personal connection • Time and play shifting of content. You (Users/Listeners) can get what you need when you need it • Training Use: Could subscribe to a training podcast feed with all your training for the year and you get new feeds when there are new training courses. I can record my message or lecture once and send it to interested parties. They can come to me for discussion ready with questions.

Can supplement “What’s New” updates to training in communications Provide managers and staffa personalized way to communicate announcements: Course Maps, SAP Changes, etc Staff meetings- communication on key point/ decisions Capture presentations for seminars and conferences to share with department Podcasting Application Examples Tacit knowledge (training strategy, why we chose this approach) Provide recyclable lectures- ie. Content sensitive help, impact mapping, use of breeze/captivate, evaluation methods Org communications Transaction training (Visual Podcasting)** Brownbags captured for posterity TCM Communication captured for posterity and used to supplement online training Record “important” meetings More possibilities exist….

  9. NOTE: Informality of presentation is okay; in fact, it is key to the cultural value of podcasting. Technology Needed Prep Needed End Users Podcasters • External Audio microphone • Computer with speakers • Recording Device/Editor (either standard built in or other) • Quiet environment to record in • Computer with speakers • Need quicktime if it’s a video podcast • MP3 players (compatible) • Know your content well • Interview format? -Make sure that your interviewee knows content • Some pods require a script • Others require well-crafted interview questions and prep session with interviewee Though you can also present material in a formal manner (scripted, planned, directed) if you want to.

Proposal- Podcasting Sandbox Podcasting Sandbox is created for team members to test applications of podcasting per their project needs or their exploration with the media • No one owns or leadsthe initiative/shared effort • Leverage participation of many to address set-back of having limited time • Participants define use and rules/provide examples • Run like an open-source collaboration project • Fosters Innovation through collaboration

  11. Next Steps • Determine subjects/projects to pilot podcast use with • Document time to develop and create as well as time for users to take.. Share cost savings. Participants who are actively/officially using technology as part of a project can use their examples as part of use case • Participants share what they’ve learned – methods, time requirements and technologies • Create Best Known Methods with needed topics/step action tables
