Getting Ready to Drive • Before getting in your vehicle, you should perform certain checks & procedures in order to stay safe • Inspect your vehicle • Be alert for small children, especially when backing up • Follow the same steps in the same order every time before you drive to develop safe pre-driving habits • This can help you solve problems before they grow into larger ones

Getting Ready to Drive • Outside Checks • Walk around your vehicle • Keys in hand • Look for objects in path • Look for oil marks on pavement • Glance at the tires to see if they are inflated properly • Check direction of front wheels • Make sure the following are clear: • Windshield • Windows • Headlights • Taillights • Check the back window for loose objects • Look inside the vehicle for unwanted passengers

Getting Ready to Drive • Getting into the Vehicle • Entering from the street side • Keys in hand • If you have a remote unlock device, unlock car door before entering street • Walk around front towards the back • You can see oncoming traffic • Do not open door if oncoming traffic • Get in quickly, close & lock the door, & put the key in the ignition

Getting Ready to Drive • Inside Checks • Lock all doors • Less likely to open in a collision • Adjust the seat • Comfort • Control of foot pedals, steering wheel • Chest at least 10 inches from hub of steering wheel • Hands, arms, & legs • Balanced, comfortable • Elbows slightly bent • Knees slightly bent • Head restraint should be in the middle of the back of your head • Inside rearview mirror should show area behind you through rear window • Left & right outside rearview mirror should show a slight amount of side of vehicle • Fasten your safety belt and ask passengers to fasten theirs

Driving a Vehicle with Automatic Transmission • Starting the Engine • Parking brake set • Selector is in PARK • Foot off of the accelerator • Turn ignition switch to ON, release when engine starts • Check gauges, warning lights, & fuel supply • Never try to start the engine if it is already running • Press accelerator slightly to check • If in doubt, turn the key to off and restart

Driving a Vehicle with Automatic Transmission • Putting the Vehicle in Motion • Press firmly on the foot brake • Move selector to DRIVE • Release parking brake • Check for traffic, ahead and rear • Use the proper turn signal to enter traffic • Check mirrors again • Release foot brake, press gently on the accelerator • Check traffic again over shoulder • Cancel the turn signal, if necessary • As you reach desired speed, let up on accelerator • Adjust speed to traffic • Use heel of foot on floor to pivot between brake and accelerator

Driving a Vehicle with Automatic Transmission • Stopping the Vehicle • Check both mirror before slowing down • Let up on accelerator • Tap the brake • Gradually press on the brake pedal • Ease up on the brake just before stopping • If you plan to move again, leave the selector in DRIVE, otherwise shift to PARK

Driving a Vehicle with Automatic Transmission • Securing the Vehicle • Once you have stopped, continue pressing the brake • Shift to PARK in automatic, REVERSE in manual • Set the parking brake • Turn off accessories • Close all windows • Turn off ignition switch • Remove key • Release foot brake • Unfasten safety belt • Lock all doors

  15. Driving a Vehicle with Automatic Transmission • Leaving the Vehicle • Check all mirrors • Make sure you have your keys • Check over left shoulder • When safe, exit quickly • Make sure all doors are locked • Walk around rear of vehicle to reduce risk of being hit
