  1. Growing with GEAR UP Iowa Thinking outside the Box

  2. Who we are… • Enrollment • 2351 students • Largest 9-12 building in the state • Equal to Hoover & North combined • Special Education • 23% • ELL population • 12%

  3. Struggles On average 1 in 12 students (13%) miss school every period of the day 1 in 4 (25%) drop out before graduation Nearly 50% of our student population (nearly 1100 students) are non-proficient in reading and math as measured by the Iowa Tests of Educational Development

  4. Goals • No Under-credited Freshman • Increase Daily Attendance by 2% • Improve the Junior Reading Proficiency by 20% (as measured by the Iowa Assessments of 2012)

  5. GUI + East High School • How do we align GU Iowa Goals with our own? • How do we develop a partnership that is forward thinking, collaborative, and systemic? • How do we make the school smaller and develop quality relationships for students who are struggling?

  6. 3 Target Areas • Under-credited Sophomores • Consistent Family/Teacher & Student Contact • Attendance We have approximately 420 GUI students-how do we monitor this? How do we track this in an efficient way? How do we do this well for all GUI students?

  7. FOCUS Attendance Interventionist Positions Extended Learning Campus

  8. Implementation Plan Interventionists will….. • Maintain meaningful contact with students and their families • Maintain ongoing communication with administration/teachers • Advocate for students; teach students to advocate for themselves • Monitor buyback time (per attendance policy) • Offer academic assistance when necessary • Be a CONSTANT in their lives • Liaison between ELC and East main Attendance Interventionist Currently our sophomore class is the lowest in the building. The daily rate is 82%. Our goal for the building is to raise attendance by 2% as a whole, which means we are 11% deficient with the sophomore class. These individuals would manage our truancy for the sophomore class. This would impact the graduation rate AND align with the GU Iowa goals. These individuals would be the constant between students, families, teachers & administration.

  9. Justin • 1st semester 42 unexcused absences, 2nd semester 3 unexcused absences • Changed all 1st semester failing grades to passing grades; currently passing all classes Kevin • 1stsemester failed 4 classes, 2nd semester passing all classes Isaac • 1st semester 58 unexcused absences, 2nd semester 1 unexcused absence • Was failing all classes 1st semester; worked to change all grades but one to passing; currently passing all courses Profiles in Success

  10. The impetus in the development of the Extended Learning Campus is the volume of students from the Des Moines Public School District that are under-credited, thus “off track” for graduation. Our hope is to provide a venue that supports, encourages, and provides opportunities for individuals to find success in learning, and life. • The Extended Learning Campus will be a three-tiered entity that provides intentional interventions infused with best practices that support the needs of the whole child. This partnership will not only allow our students an opportunity to play “catch up”, but will also lend itself to the creation of a college-bound and career-bound culture.
