Spain’s changes to the Americas New Spain (Spain’s empire in the Americas) made their colonies profitable Spain taxed the Natives (called encomiendas) Spain created large farms to grow goods to send to Europe (called haciendas) Spain also set missionaries to spread Catholicism, they wanted to treat Natives as equals
