President Harding's Conservative Policies and the Dawes Plan
President Warren G. Harding, elected in 1920, adopted a conservative approach, advocating for fiscal conservatism and a return to "normalcy" post-World War I. His administration, marked by a "make no enemies" strategy led by campaign manager Harry Daugherty, aimed to invigorate the American economy while reducing foreign dependence. The Fordney-McCumber Tariff protected U.S. businesses, making it challenging for France and Britain to repay debts. Harding's administration also saw the implementation of the Dawes Plan, facilitating reparations from Germany, but it was eventually replaced due to its ineffectiveness in 1929.
