  1. Assessment System for Ecological Alternatives Julien BUISSON - USIRF

  2. THE ACTIONS OF THE COMPANIES Actions of USIRF • 1999: first LCA by USIRF • 2004: finalisation for the fabrication part • 2006: final LCA « Craddle to grave » with pir rewied • Publication article RGRA* mars 2008 • Rectificatif FDES** RGRA février 2009 • 2010: SEVE

  3. Electricity Emissions in air Water Fuel Emissions in water Raw materials LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS Outputs (the impacts) Inputs Process of fabrication

  4. THE ORIGIN

  5. THE ORIGIN

  6. THE ORIGIN • With new response in tenders in public contracts including environmental aspect • Need to work with a common tool for all companies • Possibility for the costumer to check the different responses

  7. écologiciel A COMMON TOOL

  8. THE PRINCIPLE • In response in tenders for publics contracts, the companies may use SEVE to compare the environmental cost for different solutions • All the hypothesis are made with the same and common database

  9. THE PLUS = THE SIMPLICITY OF SEVE !!! • Available on the WEB • The user don’t need any uploading • The results in about 30 minutes • Possibility for the company to use own data (for a specific process)

  10. THE 4 INDICATORS

  11. THE FUNCTION

  12. THE LCI* * Life cycle inventory (and not analysis)

  13. THE COMMON DATA BASE • Materials • Asphalt plants • Equipments for lay down • Transports • …

  14. HOW DOES IT WORK ? (Step 1) • The person in charge of the formulas, describe the asphalt concrete with: • Type and % of raw materials • Distances and type of transport for the raw materials • The asphalt plant’s fuel • Temperature of fabrication • The % of RAP • …

  15. HOW DOES IT WORK ? (Step 1) Calculation of the environmental cost of a formula in function of the specificities of the asphalt plant

  16. HOW DOES IT WORK ? (Step 2) The estimating department describe the project with: • The operations • The quantities • The equipments • The type and distances of transports between the asphalt plant and the road work • …

  17. HOW DOES IT WORK ? (Step 2) The software is calculating the final environmental balance of the main solution and of the alternatives (energy, CO2, aggregate and RAP)

  18. THE RESULTS

  19. THE RESULTS

  20. Take care with the indicators !!!

  21. Take care with the indicators !!!

  22. THE FINAL REPORT (a PDF) TOTAL TRANSPARENCY WITH THE RESULTS !

  23. SEVE • Experimental phase of the project for 2011 • Today: • > 40 companies using SEVE • 400 asphalt plants in the database • An average of 7,5 formulas / asphalt plant • > 1300 users • > 600 projects created • Opening the access for MO & MOE in beginning of 2011 A balance the 13th / 01 /2011
