  1. Welcome Back! • Find your seat using the seating charts located on the front board (in alphabetical order by last name). • Talk to the person next to you about me. • Talk to that person about yourself. The partner with longer hair talks about him/herself first. • Finally, choose with of the following are true and which is a lie. Be prepared to defend your answer. • I graduated from Nimitz in 2002. • I graduated from Texas Tech in 3 years. • I have taught in Irving ISD for 4 years. • I taught Kindergarten before coming to Irving ISD.

  2. Grading Policy! • Formative grades = 30% • Summative grades = 70% • You are allotted 3 days to retake/redo any assignment after you receive the grade. • If you do not retake or redo the assignment by the 3 day deadline, you have lost your privilege to do so. • If you choose not to turn in an assignment from the beginning, you have forfeited your privilege to redo the assignment.

  3. Supplies Needed for English! MANDATORY: • Red pen • Blue/black pen • Highlighter • Pencil (we still make mistakes; it’s nice to be able to erase) • 200 page (or more) spiral notebook (the larger the pages, the better) OPTIONAL (to be donated to the classroom for merits): • Scissors • Glue bottles (not sticks) • Markers • Index cards

  4. Andy Warhol’s Philosophy is My Philosophy

  5. Classroom Expectations • If you do something silly, you get a demerit. You don’t have to sign anything; it is just noted. • Silly could mean (but not limited to): • Being disrespectful to me or a classmate • Forgetting required materials • Talking during instruction time • If you supply the classroom with a material (glue, scissors, index cards, post-its, etc.) or do something nice for someone else (that I witness and agree was genuine or another teacher/coach tells me about), you get merits. • Racking up demerits will create consequences such as phone calls home, detentions, and office referrals. • Racking up merits will create positive attitudes, encouraging energy, and a joyful classroom environment. It’s easy – be a good person, and be rewarded.

  6. Pet Peeves • A lot is two words. • Spelling matters to me! • Commas deserve a place (know the difference between compound and complex sentences)! • Separate has two As. • Disrespect • Negative attitudes

  7. The Main Thing Be credible. Be curious. Be clever. Be creative. Let’s continue creating ourselves together this year.
