Political Party • A Political Party is a group of people who seek to control the government through the winning of elections and the holing of public office. • This is a very broad definition and can fit any of the parties especially the two major parties • Republicans & Democrats • Another definition- is a group of people, joined together on the basis of common principles, who seek to control government in order to affect certain public policies and programs.

  3. SO WHAT IS IT THAT PARTIES DO?

  4. 1) Nominate Candidates • The major function of a political party is to nominate candidates for public office and then present them to voters. • They then help to get that candidate elected. • Nominating is almost exclusively a party function in the United States. It is one activity that most clearly sets political parties apart from all of the other groups.

  5. 2) Informing and Activating Supporters • Parties inform the people, and inspire and activate their interest and the participation in public affairs. • These parties try in inform and inspire parties in many different ways • Campaign • Take stands on issues • Criticize the candidates and their position.

  6. 3) The Bonding Agent Function • In politics, a political party acts as a “bonding agent” to ensure the good performance of its candidates and office holders. • The party tries to make sure that they are men and women who are qualified and of good character. (HA)

  7. 4) Governing • In many respects, government in the United States is government by the party. • Public office holders are chosen on the basis of party • Congress and state legislatures are organized on party line • Also Executive appointees are made with an eye to party consideration.

  8. 5) Act as a watch dog • Parties act as watchdogs over the conduct of the public’s business. • This is particularly true for the party out of power. It plays this role as it criticizes the policies and behaviors of the party in power. Political
