  2. Major Theme Of Proverbs • Proverbs 1:7 – “The fear of the Lord is thebeginning of knowledge;Fools despise wisdomand instruction.” • Proverbs 9:10 – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

  3. What Does “Fear God” Mean? • Hebrew: YARA • Dread or terror • Awe • Reverence and Respect

  4. Fear As Dread Or Terror • Deuteronomy 1:28-29 -- “Where can we go up? Our brethren have made our hearts melt, saying, ‘The people are bigger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified to heaven. And besides, we saw the sons of the Anakim there.”’ Then I said to you, ‘Do not be shocked, nor fear them.

  5. Fear As Awe • 1 Kings 3:28 – “When all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had handed down, they feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.”

  6. Fear As Reverence/Respect • Leviticus 19:3 – “Every one of you shall reverence (fear/ YARA) his mother and his father, and you shall keep My sabbaths; I am the Lord your God.”

  7. Proper Fear For God • Awe • Reverence and Respect • Terror? • Exodus 3:6– “He said also, ‘I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.”

  8. Should Christians Fear God? • Matthew 10:28 -- Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

  9. Walk In The Fear Of God • Acts 9:31 -- So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase.”

  10. Philippians 2:12 • “So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling….”

  11. We Should Fear God’s Wrath • Hebrews 10:26, 31 – “For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins….It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

  12. Give God Reverence and Awe • Hebrews 12:28-29 --Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.
