By the Numbers • The life expectancy is 77 for males and 82 for females. • The infant mortality rate is 3.1. • The total fertility rate is 2.1 • The natural increase rate is .9% increase. • Ireland’s net migration rate is 4.7. • 25% of Irish people live in urban areas. • Less than 2.5% of Irish people are undernourished.

Media • The Government funds the main radio and television programs, however freedom of press is present in their constitution. • Local radio stations are privately owned. • Local radio stations are privately owned. • Television station owners pay yearly license fees to the government. • Almost all Irish citizens own a television set and one or more radios.

Folk Culture • Irish people listen to folk music by artists such as The Dubliners, Clancy Brothers, and Sweeny’s Men. • They enjoy Uilleann pipes (unique bagpipes). • St. Patrick’s day is a very important holiday to the Irish people. They also celebrate St. Stephen’s Day, which is not popular in America. • They enjoy watching horseracing and there are many tracks throughout Ireland.
