  6. Government The Government consists of the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste (deputy Prime minister) and up to thirteen other ministers. The Taoiseach is appointed by the President, after being designated by Dáil Éireann(the lower house of parliament). The remaining ministers are nominated by the Taoiseach and approved by the Dáil. Saint Patrick Saint Patrick (died March 389- 493) is the patronsaint of Ireland, along with Saint Brigid andSaint Columba.He was born somewhere along thewest coast ofGreat Britain in the little settlement or village of Bannavem of Taburnia (vicobanavem taburniaeinhis Confessio), whichhas never been identified withcertainty. Sitessuggested include Dumbarton, Furness and Somerset, or the coastline of Wales or northernFrance; another possibility put forward for his birthplace is the settlement of Bannaventa inNorthamptonshire, for raiders captured himwith "many thousands of people" accordingto Patrick's autobiographical Confessio, and sold them as slaves in Ireland. The tiny Welsh village of Banwen has often been suggested as his birth place. It was clearly occupied in Roman times, sitting on the Neath-Brecon Roman road andnext to the two Roman forts in Coelbren.

Levels of participation and spectating are high, but as in other western regions participation has been dropping due to the increasing popularity of other activities such as watching television and playing computer games. Throughout the country a wide variety of sports are played, the most popular being Gaelic football, hurling, rugby union, soccer and field hockey.
