  2. The Generals of Sonnets • A sonnet is, simply, a relation of two different things. It is used to compare the two and communicate this to the reader. • Volta – “The Turn” • This is where the writer brings the second idea into the sonnet. Usually at the beginning of line 9. • However, Shakespeare is known for using it in the last couplet.

  3. The Italian Sonnet • 14 lines • Iambic Pentameter • Broken up into two sections • Octave with the following rhymes • A B B A A B B A • A sestet arranged with multiple possibilities (Don’t freak) • C D C D C D • C D D C D C • C D E C D E • C D E C E D • C D C E D C

  4. Shakespearean (English) Sonnet • 14 lines • ABAB – CDCD – EFEF – GG • Iambic Pentameter

  5. The Spenserian Sonnet • 14 Lines • Iambic Pentameter • ABAB – BCBC – CDCD – EE
