  2. What are commands? • To tell/order someone to DO SOMETHING! • Compare: You cut the grass. / (Tú) cortas el césped. WITH Cut the grass! / ¡Corta el césped!

  3. When do we use tú commands? • We use tú commands when we want to tell a family member, friend, child or peer to do something. • (People we would use “tú” with.) • We don’t use tú commands for groups or for people we should be formal with.

  4. How do we form tú commands? • We write commands in a special way. We use the ÉL/ELLA/UD. form of the verb. • pasar la aspiradora – to vacuum

  5. Compare: (Tú)pasas la aspiradora.¡Pasala aspiradora! (tú form of verb) (él/ella/Ud. form) Regular sentence Tú command • What’s the difference? You vacuum.  Vacuum! What someone is doing Telling someone what to do

  7. Some irregulars…. salir = sal ser = sé tener = ten venir = ven decir = di hacer = haz ir = ve poner = pon

  8. Change to the COMMAND form: Cocinas para la fiesta. Barres el suelo. Sacas la basura. Haces la cama. Pones la mesa. Cocina para la fiesta. Barre el suelo. Saca la basura. Haz la cama. Pon la mesa. Las respuestas Práctica

  9. Commands with DIRECT OBJECTS! Did you forget about direct objects?! • Open the door! • ¡Abre la puerta! (la puerta=DO) • The door is the direct object (DO). • What DOP would you use? • Do the chores! • ¡Haz los quehaceres! (los quehaceres=DO) • The chores are the direct object. • What DOP would you use? la los

  10. Commands with a direct object pronoun! • IDENTIFY the direct object. ¡Abre la puerta! • REPLACE it with a DOP ¡Abre + la¡ • ATTACH it to the end of the command. ¡Abrela! • ACCENT on 3rd to the last syllable ¡Ábre la! → ¡ Ábrela! 3 2 1 Open the door! Open it! (the door)

Commands with a direct object pronoun! • IDENTIFY the direct object. ¡Invita a los invitados! • REPLACE it with a DOP ¡Invita + los¡ • ATTACH it to the end of the command. ¡Invitalos! • ACCENT on 3rd to the last syllable ¡In víta los! → ¡Invítalos! 4 3 2 1 Invite the guests! Invite them! (the guests)

What if there is no 3rd to the last syllable? • IDENTIFY the direct object. ¡Haz los quehaceres! • REPLACE it with a DOP ¡Haz + los¡ • ATTACH it to the end of the command. ¡Hazlos! • NO 3rd to the last syllable ?!? ¡__ Haz los! → NO ACCENT! → ¡Hazlos! 3 2 1 Do the chores! Do them! (the chores)

  13. Plancha las camisas. (Iron the shirts.) Lava los platos. (Wash the dishes.) Pon la mesa. (Set the table.) ¡Plánchalas!* Iron them! ¡Lávalos!* Wash them! ¡Ponla! Set it! (no accent - no 3rd to last syllable) *add an accent (3RD TO LAST SYLLABLE) Práctica 6-8 Las respuestas
