HRD Minister says….. • This is a critical time for Higher Education in the country. • We have to set up 1000 more Universities in next 10 years to meet the requirement. • For mobility of graduates, accreditation of institutes is essential. • All stake holders should be involved in the development. • The framework should be developed for uniformity of quality while maintaining diversity & local needs. • There is a need to develop Meta University where institutes will collaborate with each other & students have choice to select the subjects of their interest. 1.Corporate perspective on Accreditation • Mr. SatishPradhan (Chair person) (Chief, Group HR, Tata Sons) • Mr. Suresh Mhatre (Vice President, TCS Ltd.) • Mr. Anil Sachdev (Founder & CEO, SOIL, Gurgaon) • Dr. UmaGanesh (CEO, Global Talent Track) • Ms. Amrita Gangotra (Director (IT), BhartiAirtel Ltd.) KKWIEER/KNN
Industry perspective • Opportunities are exploding in variety of sections but only 20-25% of engineers are employable. • Rethinking of admission process, duration of course, method of assessment and curriculum in needed to produce engineers with quality. • Our colleges are working as silos. Students are trained only on theory and technology focus is missing. • TCS has formed its own assessment process. The focus is on faculty, percentage of Ph.D. Staff, Faculty: Student ratio, Research facilities, library, labs and other infrastructure. • Curriculum should be co-created with the help of thoughtful practitioners. • Companies will find solution to the problem of students not attending 8th semester classes after getting job offer in Campus interviews. KKWIEER/KNN
2.Washington Accord on UG Engineering Education • Dr.HuHanrahan (Chairperson) (Chair, Washington Accord) • Dr. David Holger (Past President of ABET) • Dr.Kai Sang Lock (Former President, The Institution of Engineers, Singapore) • Prof. Raman MenonUnnikrishnan (Dean, COE & Computer Sciience, California State University) KKWIEER/KNN
Innovative approaches • The purpose of engineering education is to build knowledge, skills & attitude. • Accreditation helps in developing best practices for academic preparation of engineers. • The graduate attributes defined by ABET are useful for mobility. • Several initiatives recommended such as problem based learning, multi disciplinary team projects, student engagement /active learning. Co-curricular learning, Student Innovation Center, etc. • Involvement of course teachers in continuous quality improvement is essential KKWIEER/KNN
3.Quality Assurance & Accreditation- in Engineering Education • Dr.Remud Bernard (President, Commission des Titresd’Ingenieur (CTI), France) • Prof.Martin Henson (Dean of International Development, University of Essex, UK) • Dr.WilliamR.Fromme (Principal, CALIBRE Systems, Alexandria, USA) • Dr.JagannathPatil (Dy. Importance of accreditation • European Standards and guidelines have been set for Institutes as well as accrediting agencies • Reducing diversity among the countries is not the objective. It is to be preserved • Financial assistance flows to the students from accredited institutes. • Sandwich pattern or internship in industry is mandatory for engineering graduates in France KKWIEER/KNN

Director, National HRD Network, Gurgaon) • Prof.V. LakshmiNarasimhan (Commissioner, ABET) KKWIEER/KNN
Issues related to accreditation • Accreditation is seal of approval by stakeholders that the institute is meeting their expectations. • Industry experts are still looking for technical skills and academic records during campus interviews. • There is a danger that institute may do only the things required as per the NBA manual. • Accreditation is not ranking, it tells about your organization. • How to value the ‘Industrial Experience’ in Accreditation process? • Accreditation may become mandatory in near future but the main challenge is transparency in the process. KKWIEER/KNN

Mohanty (Chair person) (Director, Technology & Academic initiative, Odisha) • Dr. YavuzErcil (Secretary General, MUDEK, Turkey) • Prof. William Byrnes (Associate Dean, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, USA) • Mr. Ajay Batra (Head, AzimPremji Institute for Assessment & Accreditation) KKWIEER/KNN
Indian knowledge • India has long tradition of knowledge creation but it was interrupted due to foreign invasion. • Knowledge is lost due to lack of documentation. • TQM principles should be applied to teaching learning process. • Online education can be used to cater the needs of our country in next 20-30 years. • For i-pad generation, information processing is totally different. KKWIEER/KNN
