Vulnerabilities • Economic vulnerability - People suffering food insecurity because of inadequate incomes (livelihoods, market access etc) • PHYSIOLOGICAL vulnerability - Groups with specific nutritional needs (e.g. the elderly; sick people; pregnant and breast-feeding women) • SOCIAL vulnerability - Socially excluded individuals (Unsupported older people, widows or orphans, differently abled) • POLITICAL vulnerability - Refugees or displaced people • PHYSICAL vulnerability – Living in places prone to disaster

Addressing drivers of vulnerability • Diversifying income sources • Skill transfer - vocational training to one of the members of family dependent of agriculture • Asset transfer - Livestock • Poultry farms – individual or group • Introduction to Social protection mechanism • Social safety net • Encouragement of indigenous social protection – Zakat, Osher • Specific action plans • Relief and recovery project for IDPs • Returnees livelihoods and resettlement

Building capacities Focuses on building robust systems for problem solving • Technical capacities – • Agricultural practices that reduce erosion • Improved irrigation water use efficiency – Social water management • Organisational capacity • Building institutions – Agricultural co-operatives, Water users association • Skill building (disaster preparedness) – Government staff , • Community base • organisation leaders

Managing the disaster risks • Climate adaptation • Climate smart agriculture promotion • Training on improved land management practices • Supply of improved seed varieties • Grain store houses – Support to government • Energy efficiency training – restoring organic manure to soil Change advised

  7. Confronting impact Using the avoidance technique • Working with the government for relocation of families from danger zone to safe places • Inter -Community early warning – temporary re-location • Public address system for early warning

Online course on disaster risk management • Conducted by World bank e-institute • 6 weeks course • Personal Profiles, Country Profile, participation in the discussion forum, timely submission of Assignments and End of the Course Projects • CD of reading materials given • Course fee - 35 USD per person • Starting from 1st of July 2013
