The Model of Strategic e-Learning: Understanding and Evaluating Student e-Learning from Metacognitive Perspectives

This study presents a model of strategic e-learning that explains and evaluates student e-learning from metacognitive perspectives. It examines the impact of student learning strategies, internet self-efficacy, and metacognitive strategies on online learning achievement. The model emphasizes the importance of higher-level cognitive strategies in facilitating knowledge construction and the development of metacognitive strategies. It also highlights the need for new learning strategies and skills for effective online learning. Theoretical frameworks of metacognitive perspectives and strategic learning are discussed, along with the features and elements of online learning strategies. The model provides a framework for analyzing student online learning strategies and offers insights into improving online learning outcomes.

  1. The Model of Strategic e-Learning: Understanding and Evaluating Student e-Learning from Metacognitive Perspectives Presenter: Hsiao-lan Lee Professor: Ming-Puu Chen Date: 06 / 15 / 2009 Tsai, M. J. (2009). The model of strategic e-learning: Understanding and evaluating student e-learning from metacognitive perspectives. Educational Technology & Society, 12(1), 34-48.

  2. Background • Student learning strategy is one of the factors impacting student online learning achievement. • Student Internet self-efficacy and metacognitive strategies play important roles in student online inquiry learning. • Higher-level cognitive strategies facilitate student knowledge construction scaffoldings to enhance the development of student metacognitive strategies. • Students may be required for new learning strategies and skills so that they can become effective and successful online learners. • This purpose of this study is to presents the model of strategic e-Learning to explain and evaluate student e-learning from metacognitive perspectives.

  3. Theoretical Framework - Metacognitive Perspectives • Metacognition refers to the self-awareness of individuals about their knowledge and self-understanding, self-control and self-manipulation of the process of their own cognition. • Students with high metacognitive abilities not only are clearly aware of their learning objectives, but also know effective and efficient approaches to construct knowledge. • Such students can monitor their own learning and utilize various learning strategies, thus enhancing leaning achievement and learning motivation. • Weinstein (1994; 1998) proposed the concept of “strategic learning” to explain student learning strategies based on metacognitive perspectives.

  4. Theoretical Framework - Strategic Learning • The strategic learning (Weinstein, 1994; 1998) is focused on students as active, self-determined individuals who process information and construct knowledge. • Three interactive components that explain successful learning: skill, will, and self-regulation. • Learning strategies here refers to any thoughts, behaviors, beliefs or emotions that facilitate the acquisition, understanding or later transfer of new knowledge and skills. • Newby (1996) recognize strategic learning as a feature of expert learning. • Strategic learning stresses the need of learners to clearly realize their individual advantages and disadvantages. • A new model may be required to profile the online learning strategies used by students in Internet-based learning environment.

  5. The Model of Strategic e-Learning - Features of Online Learning Environment • Four characteristics of online learning environment: • Flexible time and space • Indirect social interaction • Abundant information resources • Dynamic learning interfaces • Different learning strategies should be required for online learners to perform online learning effectively and efficiently.

  6. The Model of Strategic e-Learning - Features of e-Learning Strategies Table 1. Elements of Online Learning Strategies

  7. The Model of Strategic e-Learning - The Model an e-learning environment and its four features • Individual e-learners can actively control these domain strategies to interact with the e-learning environment. the three domains of e-learning strategies Figure 1. The Model of Strategic e-Learning

  8. Discussions • The model of strategic e-learning provides a framework for systematically analyzing student online learning strategies. • provide a general scope for understanding and analyzing student online learning and learning strategies • It could suggest that the comprehension strategies dealing with comprehension monitoring may be closer to self-regulation domain than perceived-skill domain. • Future studies should also explore the relationships between student online learning strategies and their online learning achievements.
