Using the Eight-Stage Process to Create Change: Policy that can sustain change through the heart of leader must be able to understand and apply the eight-stage process of creating major change which includes the following: • “Establishing a sense of urgency • Creating the guiding coalition • Developing a vision and strategy 4. Communicating the change vision 5. Empowering broad-based action • Generating short-term wins • Consolidating gains and producing more change 8. Anchoring new approaches in the culture” (Kotter, 1996, p.21). Although, it is also important for the leader to understand what needs change and for what purpose. Even though, approaches, theories, and aspects of leadership must be understood in the mind, I have compared the process of change through the heart.

CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONRULES GOVERNING THE CODE OF ETHICS OF THE HEART FOR CALIFORNIA EDUCATIONAL LEADERS May 31, 2011 • 1.00 Title • 1.01 These rules shall be known as the California State Board of Education • Rules Governing the Code of Ethics of the Heart for California Educational Leaders. • 2.00 Regulatory Authority • 2.01 These rules are promulgated pursuant to the State Board of Education’s authority under CA codes • 3.00 Purpose • 3.01 The purpose of the Rules Governing the Code of Ethics of the Heart for California Educational Leaders (code) is to allow one’s heart to guide and follow the eight stage process of change.

ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS: • Fill out Sustainability Plan (may use back if necessary or add attachments) • Attach artifact with each step (eight artifacts to go along with eight stage process of change) • Fill out Class Reflection on Success & the Heart of Sustainability • Send to Lacey A. Williams via mail, e-mail, or fax (for an opportunity to be featured on the website, certificate of recognition and chance to win sustainability plan of the year)

Establishing a sense of urgency (small group discussion to brain storm ideas and report to whole group on why sustainability is vital on both a micro and macro level- why we should conserve water, why we should refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, redistribute and repair? Then may choose to do a group poster to illustrate idea, read books that show need for change, research online and provide websites) • 2. Creating the guiding coalition (decide who is going to assist- could be other classrooms in the same grade level or the whole school include support staff and administration, may write a letter to request assistance) • 3. Developing a vision and strategy (decide a plan, make steps based on whole group discussion) • 4. Communicating the change vision (have a meeting possibly before school, lunch or after school) • 5. Empowering broad-based action (make posters or fliers of need to change) • 6. Generating short-term wins (weekly gatherings to discuss both success and areas of improvement) • 7. Consolidating gains and producing more change (discuss ways of expanding and allowing for more success, show measuring scale of a way to assess change) • 8. Anchoring new approaches in the culture (accountability system, chart success and share with school and community, write a letter to school newspaper or city) Examples

  8. Heart of Sustainability (the consistent rhythm of the world’s heartbeat) The worlds needs leaders and followers willing to step forth for change. The internal accomplish of creating a sustainable Earth is immeasurable. We need everyone’s support!
