  1. Metric System

  2. International System of Units (SI) • Unit of measurement used by most scientists and most countries in our world today. • Also called the metric system.

  3. Metric System • simple to use • based on units of ten • easy to make conversions • used by all scientists • used in the medical field • used in most countries • can be easily learned in an hour

  4. Basic (SI) Units of Measurement • Length = Meter • Volume = Liter • Mass = Gram • Temperature = Kelvin

  5. Length • The distance between two points (1). • Meter.

  6. Volume • The amount of space that something occupies (1). • Liter.

  7. Mass • The amount of matter that something is made of (1). • Grams.

  8. Temperature • Measurement of how hot or cold something is (1). • Kelvin (K).

  9. Units of measure

  10. kilo- • hecto- • deka- • (unit of measure or meter-liter-gram) • deci- • centi- • milli-

  11. There are no commas in the metric system. • There are no fractions in the metric system. • When the liter symbol is hand written, it must be a capitalletter so that is not confused with a one. When it is with another symbol, lower case can be used. Ex: L stands for liter, and ml or mL both mean milliliter. • Metric temperature is Kelvin. Celsius is a more common form of SI temperature, because it is derived directly from the Kelvin scale. On the Celsius scale, water freezes at 0oC and boils at 100o C.

  12. Make a scale for conversions… • Make a row of seven boxes across your paper like this: • Use prefixes to fill in each box left to right from greatest to smallest. Start with kilo- on the left and end with milli- on the right. • Make sure they are in order and unit is in the center box.

  13. Your scale should look like this… Sentence to help you remember: King Henry Died by Drinking Chocolate Milk

  14. Let’s practice… 3.4m = ______ cm 500mg = _____ g 0.2kL = _____ L

  15. 3.5cm=____mm • 50mg=____g • 2L=____mL • 0.25km=____m

  16. 3km=____m • 1.2cm=____mm • 85g=____kg • 27mL=____L • 4.1km=____m

  17. 2.7L=____mL • 7kg=____g • 8mm=____cm • 27cm=____m • 3km=____cm
