  2. Metric system is a system of measurement based on ten • This is the basic measurement system of the world with the exceptions being the U.S., Liberia, and Myanmar

  3. U.S. Involvement • U.S. adopted metric system in 1866 • Passed Metric Conversion Act of 1975 that included a voluntary 10-year conversion timeframe but no mandatory dates • FDA has Fair Packaging and Labeling Act of 1994 that required dual labels

  4. In 1996 all surface temperature observations in National Weather Service reports use degrees Celsius • Stock exchange adopted decimals in April of 2001

  9. Base units are multiplied or divided by factors of 10 to represent bigger or smaller units of measurement Giga (G) = billion mega (M)= million kilo (k)= thousand Base Unit centi (c) = hundredth milli (m) = thousandth

  10. Tips • Unit symbols are case-sensitive – mm is different from Mm • Don't have singular and plural forms — it's 1 mL, 2 mL (no “s” at the end) • Not abbreviations - No period after unit symbols

  11. Sample references • A US cent weighs exactly 2.5 g, while the nickel weighs exactly 5 g

  12. A doorknob is typically about 1 m high

  13. The diameter of a CD or DVD is 12 cm.
