  1. Asia South Vaibhav Gawde Worldwide SE – Product Operations Interlock Utility Infrastructure – Clustering Products October 25th to 28th, 2004 VERITAS Worldwide Backup Exec & NetBackup Pro SE Conference February 26 - March 1, 2002

  2. Overview of Territory • Countries in Asia South: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, India, Indonesia • Primary Industries: Banking and Finance, Manufacturing, Software Development, Government, Education • Key Customers: SIA (Singapore Airlines), Citibank, Maxis, Hutchinson, DHL, Texas Instruments, Corporation Bank, Vijaya Bank, Polaris, India Cements • Primary competitors: Microsoft, HP, EMC, CA, Legato, SUN, IBM, HP • Good presence for VRTS in Data Protection space (Veritas is known as a backup software company), HA not very significant • Customers are starting to know the need of an HA solution

  3. Strengths • Heterogeneous platform and storage support • Workload management / Intelligent Load balancing features • Broadest application support • Failover flexibility N-to-1, N + 1, N-to-N • Manage multi-platform cluster from a single console • Resource and Service Group functionality and their inter-dependency • Ability to customize agents /Modular functionality with agents • Mixed hardware support for clustering (Sun US II & US III based systems, Intel Dual and Quad based systems etc.) • Integration with VVR and GCM/CC-Availability • Strong foundation for DR solution

  4. Weaknesses • Pricing not competitive • Difficult to compete with hardware vendor when hardware vendors bundle their HA software with their hardware. • Customer prefers “single point of contact” advantage in hardware vendor offering • Per node licensing • In new version, storages need to be SCSI III PR aware for quorum support

  5. Opportunities • Support for HP-UX / AIX / Linux / W2003 • Tight integration with Linux and bundle it as OEM  • More application support on Linux (similar to Solaris) • Cross-platform cluster • Integration with other VERITAS solutions – e.g. APM • Relationship with Application vendors (Microsoft, Oracle, SAP , BEA etc.) to develop agents with their new releases • Educate / frequent updates to consulting/SI vendors (Accenture, Infosys, Wipro, CGEYetc.) on product updates/features • Encourage SI partners for proposing custom agent • Agent for “ClearCase” application can be a built-in agent • Make replicated clusters more affordable and on all platforms

  6. Threats • VCS on Windows – Microsoft dictates market • Vendors are bundling their HA software with their hardware • Strong competition from OEM's cluster software • Host based licensing scheme • Oracle 10G, EMC/Legato, Sun cluster on Solaris, Linux cluster solutions • Low-end & cheap Cluster like solution like CA HA Manager • Portable clusterware/CRS of 10G • DoubleTake is very cheap in replicated cluster space

  7. Wins • Thailand • Hutchinson – 36 sets of VCS clusters on Sun & HPUX & Oracle • TA Orange – 5-2 failover on VCS on Windows • Malaysia • Mostly 2 node clusters, some campus cluster for manufacturing in Penang • DHL – 11 sets of VCS on HPUX & Informix • Singapore • Port of Singapore Authority: DBEAC Oracle on Sun. Superior solution compared to Sun cluster • Great Eastern Life Insurance: Strong roadmap. Proven solution in the Finance sector • Imigration and Customs Authority: strong clustered file system technology • India • Polaris : Won against Sun for HA for WegLogic. Sun did not have a ready configurable Agent for WebLogic • Vijaya Bank : Won against Microsoft Cluster server. HA for Windows Standard OS version • India Cements: Won against Sun Cluster for HA for Oracle. Sun was unable to cluster US II(E3500) and US III based systems(V880) • Philippines • Globe Telecoms - VCS for their CRBT(caller ring-back tune) • Digitel - VCS for their mediation • Smart - SFORAC for their pre-paid billing (20 million subscribers)

  8. Losses • India • National Stock Exchange - MCSG bundled with HP servers • IDBI Bank: Sun Cluster was given virtually free along with SUN StorEdge 99xx box • Philippines • Globe Telecoms - upgrade, SunCluster won because of price. • Thailand • KTB Bank – lost of HP because we can’t convince HP to sell our cluster • Singapore • Starhub Cable Vision – VCS Windows on SQL, lost to MSCS on features

  9. Top 10 • Competitive price especially for VCS on Windows • Cross platform failover • More VCS agents for database & applications • Bundled agents for popular applications • Backup Exec support • Migration tools for migration from HACMP, Sun Cluster, etc • Automation to add or remove cluster nodes
