Propaganda is defined as a systematic form of persistent persuasion that attempts to influence the emotions, attitudes, opinions, and actions of specified target audiences for ideological, political or commercial purposes through the controlled transmission of one-sided messages (which may or may not be factual) via mass and direct media channels.

  3. Propaganda can take many forms: • Posters • Newspapers • Film Reels • Radio Broadcasts • Music, Theatre

  4. Speeches • Television • Pop Culture • Literature • Symbols (flags, national anthems, heroic figures) • Cartoon • Art

  6. Why Propaganda During Conflicts??? • Propaganda attempts to evoke an emotional response that can be • mobilized to achieve a nation’s goals. In general it attempts to • deliver a focused message through: • Selective use of information • Appeals to emotions • Use of symbols • Indoctrination: • Propaganda is usually carried out in campaigns around an issue and is one form of repeating a message over and over to the point that the people stop questioning the nation or government’s objectives.
