  5. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Intrinsic Motivation

  6. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION “You’re a Sport Psychologist... What tricks can I use to get my players to play well for me?”

  7. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Intrinsic Motivation- An athlete is intrinsically motivated when he or she chooses to take part in an activity or sport for its own sake. This athlete will thrive on the pleasure and satisfaction that is derived from playing. As opposed to Extrinsic Motivation…

  8. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Key Components on Intrinsic Motivation- In order for your players to be intrinsically motivated they have certain needs: Competence: Feeling talented and skilled Autonomy: In control; doing what they want Relatedness: Feeling connected with others…

  9. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Coaches Role- You are the driver of their CAR. You’re actions, communication skills, behavior, and much more, determine whether the CAR runs smoothly or if it has the potential to break down.

  10. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION If the CAR is driven well... The player will be intrinsically motivated to... - Experience Stimulation - Accomplish - Know/Understand/Achieve…

  11. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION If the CAR is driven badly, the athlete will... - Become Demotivated - Feel Incompetent - Fear Failure - Ultimately drop out

  12. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION As coaches, what can we do? Learn how to drive our athletes motivation in the correct ways.

  13. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION The most important message you’ll take home today is: With motivation, one size does not fit all. Motivational speeches, whilst appropriate in some circumstances, are not conducive to increasing and maintaining IM

  14. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION

  15. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Athletes are people first! Their motivations fluctuate over time pending situations and it is up to us as coaches not only to identify when motivation fluctuates but also when to step in and effectively address it…

  16. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION CASE STUDY: Professional boxer whose management were engaged in a legal battle with previous coaches and managers for three years. This boxer retired at aged 30. “I no longer have the enthusiasm and willingness to make the sacrifices that are necessary... I used to love going to the gym. Now it’s a chore. I wish I still had the hunger but I don’t. The fire has burned out. I simply don’t enjoy it anymore”.

  17. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION THE INTERACTION MODEL OF MOTIVATION MOTIVATION NEEDS EXPECTATIONS PAST EXPERIENCE OUTCOME REWARDS COACH BEHAVIOR INTERACTION OF ATHLETE WITH SITUATION

  18. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION MOTIVATION GUIDELINES - Motivate yourself 1st - Motivation is about shared responsibility - Motivation is about selling - Motivation is about having and providing direction - Motivation is an ongoing process - Motivation lies in your relationship with the players - Motivate with challenges rather than threats - Have a big enough WHY? - Be careful with discipline - Don’t over do motivation…

  19. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION • MYTHS ABOUT MOTIVATION • - “Motivational” speeches have a major impact on motivation • - An athlete is responsible for their own motivation • - Motivation occurs before a big game • - Motivation is getting the players “psyched up” • Motivation is easy • Players get motivated the same way

  20. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION • “You’re a Sport Psychologist... • What tricks can I use to get my players to play well for me?” • The question should be... • “I’m a coach, what can I do to ensure that my players have the best possible soccer experience so that they are inspired, want to come back for more and play for themselves?”

  21. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION • Understand Contingent/Non Contingent Rewards • - Non Contingent Rewards: • Received without achieving a standard of improvement/development/success • - Contingent Rewards: • Received for attaining improvement/development/success

  22. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Understand GOALS - Specific - Measurable - Attainable - Realistic - Timed

  23. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Understanding Self-Efficacy Individuals’ judgment of their own ability to perform Based on: - Accomplishments - Vicarious Experience - Physiological State - Verbal Persuasion

  24. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Understand Self-Fulfilling Prophecy “Manchester United always score late goals.” “Tiger never wins when he’s behind.” “We never play well on this field.” “This team always beats us.”

  25. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Motivate your athletes by... Repaying their effort with a positive performance change (Good coaching) A motivated athlete can quickly lose motivation in the absence of knowledge, skill provision or a suitable role, which means increased effort will count for nothing…

  26. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Reinforcement & Instruction: Verbal/non-verbal appraisal can be fantastic intrinsic motivators. However, they need to be reinforced with positive instruction. As coaches, we need to identify when we NEED to instruct.

  27. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Focus on Performance not Outcome: An outcome oriented environment at ANY stage of learning can be detrimental to Intrinsic Motivation. As coaches we can’t guarantee outcomes, but we can influence performances…

  28. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Dwell on Strengths “You are very good at...” “I like the way you...” “Teams can’t cope with your...” Address Weaknesses (positively) “I’m going to help you improve your...” “We can do... to improve your...”

  29. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Be Fair Avoid having your players question why they even bother turning up to practice. “I train everyday and am always on time, but then Johnny turns up to practice once a week but plays all the games!”

  30. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Make Learning Fun: A lot of coaches across the world treat coaching like an opportunity to become a drill sergeant or take on a role of power. Negative terms such as “suicide runs” breeds negativity in practice which transfers into performance and increases fear of failure. Intrinsically Motivated players are willing to achieve!

  31. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION

  32. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Factors that will inhibit Intrinsic Motivation - “I’ll give you $5 if you score a goal.” “You have to win!” “You’re on the bench AGAIN!” Punishment Poor coaching Poor communication Favoritism

  33. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION Your Player... - Will have to see the connection between their actions and the perceived outcomes - Needs to feel like an important member of the group climate - Will need direction - Should not be labeled…

  34. EFFORT, PERFORMANCE, OUTCOME & SATISFACTION INTRINSICALLY MOTIVATED PLAYERS BELIEVE… IN THEMSELVES: CAN YOU AS A COACH FOSTER THEIR SELF BELIEF?
