  1. After the Flood Study 2 – “The Prophecies of Noah” After the Flood

  2. Heading Gen. 9:18-19- And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan. These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread. After the Flood

  3. The table of Nations…. From Shem, Ham and Japheth “…of them was the whole earth overspread.” After the Flood

  4. All nations from one In Acts 17:26, Paul says - “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth”. Challenged on the grounds that there are various blood types. In the Greek “blood” is omitted - the R.V. renders it: “hath made of one”, i.e. first Adam, then Noah. Weymouth - “He caused to spring from one forefather people of every race”. After the Flood

  5. The first recorded vineyard “husbandman”– ishadamah – man of the soil. Lit. – “a man of the ground”. After the Flood

  6. Wine in the O.T. There are 8 words used for wine in the O.T. yayin – to ferment. Used of every sort of wine. tirosh – from root, to possess (i.e. the brain). chemer – to ripen. Used of strong red wine. shekar – strong drink. asis – new or sweet wine. The word used inGen. 9:21 sobe – to drink to excess, become drunk. mimsak – mixed or spiced wine. shemarim – old wine. After the Flood

  7. Proverbs 23:29-35 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. After the Flood

  8. Proverbs 23:29-35 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again. Binge drinking and consequent immorality and violence is the scourge of teenagers in Australia After the Flood

  9. Effect of intoxication - Gen. 9:21 Several Hebrew words are used for the first time in this verse including “wine”. “uncovered” – galah – to be uncovered, to reveal oneself. The verb indicates an action done on one’s own behalf – thus “he uncovered himself”. Consistent with Prov. 23:29-33– produces lack of control, loosens moral grip and arouses sexual desire. Hab. 2:15-16 presents case of use of alcohol to take sexual advantage of another. After the Flood

  10. “Nakedness” Hebrew - ervah- nakedness, nudity, shame, pudenda. First occ. in O.T. This is the word used throughout Lev. 18and 20 of uncovering nakedness – a euphemism for sexual relations – see Lev. 20:11. The use of this word implies shameful nakedness rather than simple nudity for which the word erom is used 10 times in the O.T. The latter occurs for example 3 times in Gen. 3(v.7,10,11). After the Flood

  11. Characteristics within the Ecclesia Several characters in Noah’s family encapsulate all types within the Ecclesial family. Noah – Upright but subject to weakness and failure – The earnest, but weak sinner. Ham– Ungrateful and devoid of respect and honour – Arrogant and spiteful sinner. Shem – Sensitive and respectful – Godly. Japheth – Dependent on others for leadership – Willing to conform and do what is right. Canaan– Privately base and corrupt – Quick to take advantage of other’s weaknesses. After the Flood

  12. Why is Canaan cursed? Almost certainly involved in the transgression with his father. Perhaps in the aftermath when Ham emerged to declare Noah’s state. May have rushed in to look while Shem and Japheth fetched a covering for Noah. The Complete Word Study O.T. suggests may have been involved in some indecent behaviour with Noah before Ham entered the scene. The major reason- He is the father of the Canaanitish nations “spued” from the Land for their immorality, promiscuity and depravity in both domestic and religious life – Lev. 18:25-28; Deut. 12:29-31. After the Flood

  13. Shem – The Name-bearer Shem = A name; renown. Is a type of Christ. Shows respect and honour to his father. Provides a covering for a weak sinner. Leads others by example. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. After the Flood

  14. arar – 6th occ. qalal - to make light or despicable; to curse. Blessing and Cursing Gen. 9:26– Youngs Lit. - “Blessed of Yahweh my God is Shem” - (6th occ. of barak). Gen. 9:25 – “Cursedbe Canaan”. 5th occ. of arar. The principle established here is that honourablebehaviour brings a blessing, while the opposite produces a curse. Hence, Gen. 12:3 – “I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee”. After the Flood

  15. The roots of Gen. 12:3 • Cursing • Ham and Canaan “made light” of Noah’s predicament. • Inherited the curse of servitude. • Those who make light of Abraham also inherit a curse –servitude and ultimate rejection. Blessing Shem and Japheth honoured their father and bestowed the blessing of a covering. Inherited a blessing. Those who bless Abraham receive the blessing of a covering for sin and ultimate redemption – Acts 3:26. Acts 3:26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. The principle also applies to nations and peoples After the Flood

  16. Enlarging the enlarger – Gen. 9:27 “God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.” Japheth – “expansion”, “enlarged”, “wide spreading”. Rotherham – “God give extension to Japheth, but make his habitation in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be their servant.” After the Flood

  17. Noah’s prophecy fulfilled Japheth is the progenitor of the white races who spread across almost the entire Eurasian continent. National perspective - Colonisation of many far off lands has fulfilled the prophecy. Religious perspective- Christianity claims to ‘dwell’ now because of its origins, and its claims of the ‘holy sites’. ‘Japheth’ (Gog) will be motivated by the desire to possess the ‘holy sites’ in its invasion of the Land. After the Flood

  18. Japheth = Caucasian Caucasian - term once used by anthropologists to refer to a racial group consisting primarily of light-skinned peoples of Europe, North Africa, western Asia, and India. The designation Caucasian was first used in the 19th century by scholars who believed that white Europeans originated in Caucasia, a region of south-eastern Europe. - Microsoft Encarta After the Flood Ararat Mountains

  20. Dwelling in the tents of Shem Japheth spawned Gomer, Magog, Madai (Medes = Persia), Javan (Greeks), Tubal, Meshech, Togarmah and Tarshish– all are involved in the invasion by Gog of the Land of Israel – Ezek. 38. The sons of Japheth will initially dwell in the tents of Shem as aggressors – Dan. 11:45. Ultimately, they will dwell there as worshippers, sharing the blessings of Shem (the Name) - Isa. 12:4; 18:7; 29:23; 59:19; 60:9; Jer. 3:17; Ezek. 36:23; Zeph. 3:9; Zech. 14:9; Mal. 1:11. After the Flood

  21. Japheth and Ham attempt to seize the tents of Shem Gog leads an invasion of the Land of Israel Opposed by Tarshish (Britain) and the young lions (her allies) Ezek. 38 Zech. 14 Joel 3 Dan. 11

  22. The Tsarist Anthem Verse 3 “God save Orthodox Rus, First among nations! (Make) Her Kingdom harmonious, Serene in her strength, And cast out All that is base!” After the Flood

  23. Heading Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer….for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. –Isa. 56:7 After the Flood The tabernacle (ohel) of David –Isa. 16:5
