  1. Pig production in VietnamSituation, Challenges and ProspectsPresenter: Msc.Vo Trong Thanh Department of Livestock Production – MARD

  2. Contents Growth of pig production in Vietnam in the period 2000-2010 Structure of pig herd and pig breeding Development of pig farm Limitation in slaughtering, processing and marketing Challenges of pig production in Vietnam Tendency for development of pig production Prospects of Vietnamese pig production

  3. I. Growth of pig production in the period of 2000-2010

  4. Role of pig production in Vietnam • In 2010: • Gross output of agriculture production (Cultivation, Livestock, Service) 528,739 billions dong; • - Gross output of livestock production reached 129,679 billions dong. Resource: Statistical Yearbook of Vietnam in 2010

  5. Number of pig head in the period 2000-2010 In 2010: - The total pig population was 27.4 million heads, decreased 9% in comparison with 2009. However: - Total pig number by slaughtering reached49.3 millions, increased 7,4% compared with 2009; Resource: Statistical Yearbook of Vietnam in 2010

  6. Production of pig meat - Total live weight pig meat reached 3.03 million tons in 2010 (increased 3.3% in compared with 2009 and 114% in compared with2000). Resource: Statistical Yearbook of Vietnam in 2010

  7. Productivity of pig production In the period of 2000-2010, the number of pig head increased 3.6%/year but pig meat production reached 11.4%/year. Resource: Statistical Yearbook of Vietnam in 2010

  8. Density of pig head by ecological areas Note: <50 pig head/km2 50 – 99 pig head/km2 100 – 200 pig head/km2 > 200 pig head/km2 North East North West Red River Delta North Central South Central and Central coastal areas Central Highlands South East Mekong River Delta Resource: Statistical Yearbook of Vietnam in 2010

  9. Pig production by ecological areasin 2010 Percentage of pig head Pig meat production 5 provinces have over 1 million pig heads: Ha Noi, Thai Binh, Bac Giang, Nghe An and Dong Nai. Resource: Statistical Yearbook of Vietnam in 2010

  10. Comparison: pig, cattle and poultry production in the period of 2000-2010 Resource: Department of Livestock production

  11. II. Structure of pig herd and breeding of pig

  12. Structure of pig herd in 2010 • Total of sow on 2010: 4.16 million heads, reduced 0.1% compared with 2009. Resource: Department of Livestock production

  13. Structure of pig herd by breed 2010 Number of exotic pig is 5.2 million heads in 2010, increased 13.9% compared with 2009 (4.6 million heads); Number of local pig: about 2 million heads Growth rateof exotic pig sow is 12.7% in the period of 2009 - 2010 (550,000heads in 2009 and 620,000 heads in 2010) Resource: Department of Livestock production

  14. Pig breed programs At present, about 140 pigbreeding units and enterpriser are keeping the Grand Grand Parent pig (GGP)and Grand Parent pig (GP), with about 321,000 pig heads, in which, there are 8,000 GGP exotic sow heads; 9 pigbreeding units belongs to MARD(1,600 GGP sows and 1,770 GP sows, accounted 20% and 0.6% of GGP and GP sows in whole country). Resource: Department of Livestock production

  15. III. Development of intensive pig farm

  16. Intensive pig farm: develop rapidly but unsustainably Number of intensive pig farms in whole country: 8.500. Percentage of pig production from intensive farms: 45%, from householders: 55%. Resource: Department of Livestock production

  17. High percentage of pig heads in small scale pig farms and householders About 81.4% pig heads come from householders and small scale pig farms 1. It cause obstructions to invest the husbandry technologies for intensive farming 2. It is difficult to control epidemic.

  18. IV. Limitation in Slaughtering, Processing and Marketing

  19. Pig slaughtering methods and pork processing technologies Pig slaughtering method and pork processing technologies are mainly manual and backward It is difficult to control pig meat standard and food safety and hygiene requirements. There are about 28 pork processing factories with products such as ham, sausage. The proportion of processing pork is quite low (approximately 2%). Resource: Department of Livestock production

  20. Many intermediariesin the pig meat commodity Domestic consumers (99%) intermediaries Large slaughter unit Farmers Retailers in city Wholesales Super- market Small slaughtering units Retailers in rural Export market (1%) Collectors Processing unit for export Resource: Department of Livestock production

  21. Pork market: develop unsustainably Links between production and markets has not been firmly established Volatility in pig market price Asymmetry in pig market information Profitability of farmers is low (does not stimulate the production)

  22. V. Challenges of pig production sector of Vietnam Controlling disease, especially dangerous infectious diseases Controlling inputs of pig production sector (Breed, animal food, veterinary medicines ....) Controlling outputs of pig production sector (quality of meat, food safety and hygiene)

  23. V. Challenges of pig production sector of Vietnam (continue) 4. Planning for intensive farms that associate with slaughtering, processing and domestic market 5. Improving the comparativeness of pig meat for exporting 6. Controlling the pollution from pig farm to slaughtering.

  24. VI. Tendency for pig production in Vietnam 3 Increasing: Increase the size of farm Increase product quality Increase profitability of livestock 3 Decreasing: Reduce Disease Reduce environmental pollution Reduce hazardous supplements (antibiotics, substances gain weight, substance lean .

  25. VII. Prospects for pig production in Vietnam (continue) Pig industry will remain a mail sector contributing food of Vietnam; The private sector will invest strongly in the sectors of pig production and pork processing, and pig breed; The planning will allow the pig sector developing in sustainable way;

  26. VII. Prospects for pig production in Vietnam (continue) 4. The State will complete the legal framework to control inputs and outputs of pig production; 5. Cooperation and technology transfer in the pig production will place strong and effective; 6. Domestic demand of pork will increase with high requirements of food safety and hygiene.

  27. VII. Prospects for pig production in Vietnam (continue) 7. Number of pig head will increase slowly, in contrast, pork production will increase faster; pig meat quality will be controlled more tightly; 8. Model of safety farm and organic farm will be concerned and developed 9. Exporting Vietnamese pork to the EU, Japan ... will be bright.

  28. Conclusion • Growth of pig population and pig production in the period of 2000-2010 is encouraged; • Pig breeds need to further improve to meet production needs; • Pig farm models have develop but lack of plan and sustainablity. Government should support positively to pig intensive farms. • There are many limitations and inadequacies in slaughtering, processing and marketing of pig. The input and output of pig production should be controlled; • There are many challenge for pig production sector of Vietnam, especially infectious diseases; • To survive and develop, this sector have tendency to increase the scale, improve the quality, rise the efficiency and concern more the sustainability; • Exploiting advantages, concerning long-term trategies, increasing the pig product competitiveness, … will create a great prospects for Vietnamese pig production.
