  3. What is BC and AD? • BC = Before Christ • AD = Anno Domini • (Latin for “In the Year of Our Lord) • Who’s ‘Lord’?

  4. Why are we in the Year 2017? • The standard calendar we use today around the world is the Christian calendar • Also called the “Gregorian Calendar” • So, Year 0 is the birth of Christ, the beginning of Christianity • We use 1 calendar internationally to avoid confusion • Are there other calendars besides this one?

  5. Many other Calendars! • Chinese Calendar • Islamic Calendar • Buddhist Calendar • Hebrew (Jewish) Calendar • Egyptian Calendar • Babylonian Calendar • Hindu Calendar • Ethiopian Calendar • Many others! • Some in still in use today, others are not

  6. Remember! • BCE = BC • CE = AD • They are the same thing!! • Why don’t we just use BC and AD? • You can, but most historians don’t. • Saying AD is saying that Jesus Christ is your Lord. • AD means “In the Year of Our Lord” • Not everyone is Christian (especially historians)

  7. Timeline Same As Number Line • BCE = Negative numbers • CE = Positive numbers • CE starts at Year 0 • For example: 100 BCE is the same as -100 100 CE is the same as +100 • How many years are between 100 BCE and 100 CE? • Find the range
