Sieur de la Salle Sieur de la Salle led an expedition down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. He claimed land along the way for France. Later la Salle sailed past the mouth of the Mississippi River and landed in Texas instead. They created a fort and named it Fort St. Louis. The fort was located between present-day Galveston and Corpus Christi.
