  3. What do you know about the reason “pilgrims” came to America?

  4. We know some of the earliest pilgrims migrated to America looking for freedom to practice their religious beliefs.

  5. Do you remember the parts of the First Amendment, protecting freedom of religion?

  6. Read aloud the passages protecting freedom of religion…Summarize, in your own words, what kinds of activities are protected?

  7. Did other types of “pilgrims” come to America later?

  8. A pilgrim isn’t just someone who came to America on the Mayflower…A “pilgrim” is anyone who undertakes a “pilgrimage”- a journey to a place, often traveling a very far distance.

  9. Over the years, many pilgrims have come to America for many reasons…

  10. Some Jewish people came from Europe and Russia because they could not worship freely there…

  11. Some came because they could not speak freely or write what they thought…

  12. Some came from Asia because they were denied rights to petition their governments for change…

  13. Whatever the reason, the First Amendment’s protections drew many “pilgrims” to a new home in the United States…

  14. So, every year when we celebrate Thanksgiving and the “pilgrims” migration to the New World in search of freedom of religion…

  15. …we can remember the many other “pilgrimages” made by immigrants over 200 years, seeking First Amendment liberties.
