6. dangling elements จากตัวอย่างประโยคข้างต้นนี้ จะเห็นว่าสิ่งที่ทำให้คำหรือกลุ่มคำอยู่ลอย ๆ โดยมิได้อ้างถึงหรือขยายคำใดนั้น เป็นเพราะผู้เขียนตั้งใจที่จะให้ส่วนนั้นขยายประธานของประโยค แต่ปัญหาอยู่ที่ว่าประธานและ dangling element ไม่ไปด้วยกัน เช่น ในประโยคแรกดูเหมือนว่า legal text เป็นสิ่งที่ confused ซึ่งเป็นไปไม่ได้เพราะต้องเป็นคนที่ confused ในทำนองเดียวกัน ในประโยคอื่นประธานถือเป็นสิ่งของและเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่มีชีวิต (lessons, report, noise) แต่ดูเหมือนจะทำกริยาอาการของคน (play, work, play) ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่เป็นไปไม่ได้ ดังนั้นวิธีแก้ประโยคคือใส่ประธานที่เป็นบุคคล (I, one, we, he) เพื่อจะเป็นผู้แสดงกริยาอาการนั้นได้
