  1. Access to Research: free, walk-in access to academic research in Oxfordshire LibrariesARLG/ISG, CILIP 9 July 2014Katharine SpackmanLead Librarian, Information Services

  2. Who benefits? • Everyone. The public library online service is enhanced; authors’ work has a wider audience; participating publishers’ wider reputation; the individual library customer disenfranchised by inter-library loan fees; all those with intellectual curiosity • Those no longer affiliated to an educational or research establishment who had lost access • Students; academics; scientists; researchers; those whose own institution do not subscribe to particular journals • Anyone researching unusual medical conditions or in need of detailed health information

  3. Usage and Impact • Oxfordshire is in the top 10 authorities by usage . • Extremely positive customer feedback • Vice Chancellor of Oxford Brookes retweeted Oxfordshire Libraries’ information about A2R and made it a favourite tweet

  4. Oxfordshire Libraries promotion • Press release locally on heels of national media launch • Council website and intranet • Social media • Advocacy by staff and library volunteers • Template promotional information for local staff to forward to community newsletters • Talks - Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and local groups

  5. A two-year pilot – learning points • there can still be occasional glitches with our ICT and the platform • good staff training overcomes problems and provides an opportunity to talk to customers about the service in more detail • It is highly valued by customers • crucially (self-evidently), that it deserves to become permanent.
