  3. Agenda • Customer Challenges - Migration or Interoperability? • What is Services for Netware? • Quest NDS Migrator

  4. Interoperability Migration Customer Challenges • Business Problem: • Windows Server 2003 and AD are attractive technologies but how do we initiate deployment without scrapping our investment in existing systems? • Interoperability becomes the key component of their migration path to integrate newer technology • Maximize returns on prior investments made in software, hardware, and training • Reduce cost of supporting and managing a mixed network infrastructure • Leverages existing NDS/eDirectory experts as they are extremely valuable in AD planning • Extend existing legacy investment using newer technology

  5. Netware Migrations “give me tools to help me migrate” “I have invested in a lot in Netware I can’t just drop it” “…migration?…I need guidance, services ”

  6. Agenda • Customer Challenges - Migration or Interoperability? • What is Services for Netware? • Quest NDS Migrator

  7. What is Services for NetWare? • Set of interoperability utilities that help integrate Windows Server 2003 into a NetWare environment: • Directory Synchronization Services synchronizes Active Directory™ with NDS, eDirectory • File Migration Utility migrates NetWare files to Windows Server 2003 • File and Print Services for Netware provides Netware 3.x services on Windows Server 2003

  8. Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services File Migration Utility File and Print Services for NetWare v.5.02 Services for NetWare Overview • Synchronizes AD with NDS/eDirectory • Reduces directory management • Simplifies adoption of Windows Server • Migrates NetWare files to Windows Server 2003 • Accelerates migration processes • Preserves access control information • Enables a Windows 2003 Server to look like a NetWare File/Print Server • Reduces migration costs • Consolidates hardware support costs

  9. Services for Netware Prerequisites • Active Directory • Schema extensions are added to support MSDSS session information • Must have Schema Admin Rights • Target domain, objects to be migrated • Novell Client32 for Windows • 4.9 SP2 • Must be installed on Domain Controller • Novell Netware 4.x, 5.x, 6.x • NDS or eDirectory supported • Admin Schema rights • IP protocol supported • Novell Netware 3.x • Bindery Support • IPX protocol supported

  10. Purpose: • Communication • Distributed management • Centralized Identity Management Technologies: • Microsoft Identity Integration Server • 2003 • Services for NetWare Interoperability With NDS, eDirectory Windows Server 2003 NDS & eDirectory

  11. Active Directory NDS, eDirectory 2-Way Changes flow bi-directionally between Active Directory and NDS, eDirectory Good when administrators want to continue to manage data from both directories Good when users need to access data on the Netware server 1-Way And 2-Way Support Active Directory NDS, eDirectory 1-Way • Changes flow only from Active Directory to NDS, eDirectory • Good for using Active Directory as management focal point • Best when short-term strategy is migration to Active Directory

  12. File Migration Utility • Supports Netware file migration to Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 • Netware 3.x; 4.x; 5.x and 6.x • NDS, eDirectory 8.7.3 • Preserves user permissions at the folder and file level • Logging capabilities • Uses MSDSS generated mapping file to objects to permissions on AD

  13. File Migration Considerations • Amount of data being migrated • Analysis and understand how much user data needs to be migrated • Backup critical data such as user data • Storage consolidation opportunities • Consolidate data on to Windows Storage Server 2003 from multiple Netware File Servers

  14. Planning a Migration • Directory restructuring • OU, Groups, entitlements etc • Removing Novell Client32 from workstations • Using NETCFG from the OEM Pre-installation Kit (OPK) • Or wipe and reload • Logon script modifications • Drive mappings • Printer mappings • ZenWorks application objects • 3rd party tools

  15. Services for Netware 5.03 is available at no cost!

  16. Services For NetWare Resources: • Services for Netware Information • http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sfn • Netware to Windows Server 2003 Migration Guide • http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/sfnmig.mspx

  17. Agenda • Customer Challenges - Migration or Interoperability? • What is Services for Netware? • Quest NDS Migrator

  18. Product Schematic Object Migration AD Forest NDS Tree NDS Migrator Console Mapping Database Repermission Data Migration

  19. Quest NDS Migrator Features • Pre-Migration Mapping and Planning • It facilitates the object and data migration from Novell to Windows 2000\2003 Active Directory. • It allows for object and OU mappings to be established before the actual migration so that any potential conflicts are identified for resolution prior to the migration. • Flexible Migration of Accounts/Groups to AD • During user and group migration an account mapping can be established between source NDS account and the target Active Directory Account. • Ability to establish mappings in the following ways: • Using the console to select the source NDS container and the destination Active Directory container where the NDS objects should be created. • Map NDS objects to existing Active Directory users or groups. • Importing a CSV file with pre-defined mappings • Importing an Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services (MSDSS) file

  20. Quest NDS Migrator Features • Intra-NDS Name Conflicts • Performs a Intra-NDS naming conflict check to identify duplicate names within the NDS tree • Scheduled, unattended data movement • Scheduled data migrations free the administrator’s time and allow data to be migrated during off-peak hours • Pre-migration file scan • Scans source and target computers to ensure that all files and folders are valid, • Appropriate access permissions are present • Target disk has enough free space.

  21. Quest NDS Migrator Features • MAC file support • During the data migration all MAC files are automatically identified and their permissions properly translated as the files get migrated to the targetWindows 2000\2003 server. • Multi Threaded copy engine • Multi threaded copy engine accelerates the data movement from NDS to Windows 2000\2003 and reduces the overall migration project. • Built by Quest Professional Services Organization • NDS Reporter (Assessment of NDS Environment) • Workgroup Migrator (Migrate workstations from a workgroup to Active Directory) • Remove Novell Client from Windows 2000 and XP

  22. Project Planning

  23. Deployment Considerations • Location of the NDS Migrator console • Location of Active Directory volumes (network) • Location of NetWare volumes (network) • Obtaining administrative access to all resources • Database considerations • SQL 2000 • MSDE

  24. Deployment Considerations • Planning Requirements: • Complete list of users / groups to be migrated • List of volumes to be migrated • List of project options to be selected • List of duplicate objects in the migration project • A change control process • An exception handling process

  25. Deployment Considerations Duplicate Object Detection: • Verify the existence of duplicate objects in NDS • Verify if the object(s) already exists in Active Directory • Perform clean-up on object duplicates • Decide on merge options if objects already exist

  26. Deployment Considerations User & Group Migration: • Migrate users and groups to Active Directory • OU Structure considerations • Password Synchronization • Complete set of object mappings in database • Ensure proper object creation and location

  27. Deployment Considerations NetWare Volume Migration: • Migrate data from NetWare volumes to Active Directory volumes • Scheduling Migrations from other servers • Factors that determine the length of the Volume Migration (LAN/WAN Speeds, hardware, etc…)

  28. Starting a Migration • Creating a migration project • Setting migration Options • Need to be set prior to migrating users and groups. • Each project in the Migration Guide contains its own set of migration options, set when you define that project • Setting the Global Options
