What’s a Blog ? • Part web site • Part journal • Part free-form writing spaces that • Have the potential to enhance writing and literary skills while offering a uniquely stylized form of expression • An effective medium for many educators who lack strong computer skills • A blog is about creating a conversation

  3. What’s a Blog ? • A Blog is a web site that often provides commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. • A Blog is a web site that allows an author to publish instantly from any Internet connection. A blog can be interactive, allowing teachers and students to begin conversations or add information published there.

  4. Distinct attributes • Unlike threaded discussions, only the author of a blog can create a new topic, called making a post, for a discussion. • Unlike email, blogs are sites where authors post in reverse chronological order.

  5. What Blogs are not. • A place to just turn in papers. • A replacement for a message board. • Something that will sit there and run itself. • Benign, boring document without hyperlinks or references. • A place to write in the 3rd person.

  6. What Blogs are… • A place to share your reflections about your passion. • Part of a conversation. • A tool to extend class conversation outside the classroom. • A place to site your opinions. • A place where decision makers are looking to spot trends and opinions. • A place to promote yourself and your opinions.

  7. What Blogs are… • A place to address issues of professional concern. • A place to overcome geographic or professional isolation. • A place to vent (blow off steam).

  8. Why Should Students Blog? • Blogs are easy to create. • Many are free. Those that are not free are affordable. • They will have a worldwide audience for their opinions. • They can syndicate their blog, that is, make the blog available to Internet users who subscribe to their blog.

  9. Why Should Students Blog? • Blogs are flexible, lots of uses. • Encourages class participation and discussion. • Easy way to practice writing and improve writing skills. • Give them a feeling of ownership.

Types of Blogs There are many different types of blogs, differing not only in the type of content, but also in the way that content is delivered or written. • Personal Blogs (an ongoing diary or commentary by an individual) • Corporate and organizational blogs (for business purposes) • By genre (focus on a particular topic) • By the media type (A blog comprising videos is called a vlog, one comprising links is called a linklog, a site containing a portfolio of sketches is called a sketchblog or one comprising photos is called a photoblog) • By device (can be defined by which type of device is used to compose it. A blog written by a mobile device like a mobile phone could be called a moblog)

  14. Blog title: Be creative:-) http: Please use your USERNAME Real First Name + Initial + Fun Science Word (you can change the Blog title later) (you can change this later too)

  15. Click on settings and see the page below. You can change the the Title and Description Later… Here in Settings Change This! From Yes to No Leave these alone, scroll down and hit the:

  16. After you you will see, “Settings Were Saved Successfully”. Now go to Permissions. The first box is ‘Blog Authors’ Only you will be an Author, but you will be added to Your class blog, and the Social Space blog as Authors. (I do this, you just leave this box alone) (The Wizadd went to our school)

  17. YOU MUST CHANGE THIS SECTION! Click This! Then add e-mails (at least one is required) Then INVITE You will invite: Me, dtruss@sd43.bc.ca and thewizadd@yahoo.com Everyone from BOTH classes, (we will organize this soon) And at some point we will also invite your parents, (They won’t be invited to the Social Space -sorry Mom & Dad)

  18. Go to the top right corner, And click on Dashboard (Or on the from most pages) Your Dashboard, below, is very useful! Notice: • View Blog • + New Post • Manage: Posts, Settings, Layout • Edit or View Profile • My Account (your new Google Account - We will set this up soon) Go to: Edit Profile

  19. Uncheck this! All 3 of these boxes are to be blank before you save the profile. Do not add anything to this page, just scroll down and… - - - - - - - - - - This will show up, and if you click on the (View Updated Profile) you will see this… Never mind what they say… Keep your profile private! If you go to this page, hit the back button or the blogger .

  20. You are ready to post… but there is one more important step to do: Go to your e-mail and open the “accounts-noreply@google” message. You will see: Welcome to Google Accounts. To activate your account and verify your e-mail address, please click on the following link: http://www.google.com/accounts/VE?service=blogger&c=(really-big-number)&hl=en Click the link, see this, then Click here. - - - - - - To get to your site you can either go to the site: http:// [Your Username] .blogspot.com/ Or

  21. You can go to: http://www.blogger.com Click on New Blogger Next, Type in the e-mail address you signed up with, (should be your student e-mail) and the password.
