  1. FAMOUS LIES Lies About Time

  2. Lie: Time is Money and It’s Ours Matt. 6:25 – Jesus: “Is not life more important than food?” • Time is not our possession – (Matt. 6:27) – Who of you … can add a single hour to his life? • And, neither is our money – (1 Cor. 6:20) – You are not your own; you were bought at a price. • God gives us both time as money as a trust, to be used for his glory – (1 Cor. 4:1-2) – So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.

  3. The Lie about the Crucifixion The Lie: That the suffering and the sacrifice was temporary. The Truth: The suffering and sacrifice is eternal.

  4. Rev. 13:5-10 – The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months. He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world. He who has an ear, let him hear. If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints.

  5. Eph. 1:3-10 –  Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.

  6. 1 Cor. 15:20-28 –  But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For he "has put everything under his feet." Now when it says that "everything" has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

  7. Christ crucified was not just a harmless trick play that ended in sacrifice. • God’s eternal nature makes the cross an eternal event. • Christ sacrifice rendered a change in the status of Christ himself (Phil. 2:5-8). • Our constant and consistent participation in the Lord’s Supper is not only a participation in his eternal sacrifice, but a proclamation of his death till he comes again.

  8. Some Other Time Lies…

  9. The Lie: Time is on our side. The Truth: Time is against us. Eph. 5:15-16 – Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. • This is a cursed, condemned world. • We’re born into sin; we “catch it.” • For each good moment we have, millions are having bad ones. • If we don’t choose salvation, we will be eternally lost.

  10. The Lie: There’s always tomorrow. The Truth: Today your soul will be required of you. About the “rich fool” God said: (Luke 12:20) – “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?” Jesus said: (Matt. 6:34) – Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. • Tomorrow is not ours; we only have this moment. • The future is only a possibility.

  11. The Lie: The future is ours. The Truth: The future is NOT ours. James said: (Ja. 4:13-16) –  Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that." As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil.

  12. Presumptions about having a future here are actually evil. • Our lives are extremely temporary, even compared to earthly time, and especially so when compared to eternity. • Our thoughts and plans for the future ought to be done so in order to impact what we do today, not to put off any good we ought to do until tomorrow—thus, James’ conclusion to the passage: 17Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.

  13. Conclusion The Lie: Time is on our side. The Truth: Time is against us. The Lie: There’s always tomorrow. The Truth: Today your soul will be required of you. The Lie: The future is ours. The Truth: The future is NOT ours.
