  1. Welcome to 2nd Grade in Room 19!!! 1. The parent sign in sheet will be passed around on a clipboard. Sign up to volunteer on the back table! e sign in at the table. An up to volunteer!  2. Read your child’s note and write a note for your child to read tomorrow. ”You deserve a pat on the back, because…” Leave this on your child’s desk. 3. Fill out the two forms on your child’s desk and return them to me when they are completed. This power point and the 2nd Grade Packet will be on my webpage!!!!  Thank you!!!!!

All About Me • Raised in the Bay Area: family of teachers • Graduated from UC Santa Barbara • Teaching Credential from Cal State East Bay • This is my 20 year teaching • Live with my husband (teacher) and teenage step-daughter, Madison, and baby, Gabby (future teacher? ) • Feel fortunate to work at Leitch

  4. Classroom Goal • I want to create a positive, hands-on learning environment. • I’d like to promote independent learners and academic growth. • Students will improve organizational skills, social skills, and study habits. • I’ll instill the ‘love of learning’ in my students.

Benchmark Advance Program • Components: • Phonemic Awareness and Phonics Skills • Comprehension Reading Strategies • Leveled Readers • Mentor Texts/Read Alouds • Writing Journals/Published Writing • Anchor Charts • Student Consumable Texts for Close Reading (Fiction, Non-Fiction Selections) • Whole Class/Small Group Instruction

  10. Daily 5 Is a series of literacy tasks which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals. Promotes independent workers: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Writing, and Word Work

  11. Writing: \ • What can you do to help your child become a better writer? • The last skill to be developed • The Writing Process: Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Proofreading, and Publishing • Modeling Paragraphs/Mentor Texts • Narrative, Informative, Opinion: Covered in all units

  13. What is Math Expressions? • Math Expressions: Standards-based instruction with the best of traditional approaches. • Math Expressions uses objects, drawings, conceptual language, and real-world situations to help students build mathematical ideals that make sense to them.

Components of Math Expressions • Quick Practice: 5-min activity intended on activating prior-knowledge at the beginning of the lesson • Drawn Models: Moves students from physical manipulatives (concrete) to conceptual drawings (abstract) which helps children explain their thinking and helps teachers gain insight to students’ understanding • Language Development: Students are encouraged to write their own problems and describe their problem-solving strategies in writing through journal prompts • Student Leaders: Encourages participation & helps with children gain independence • Math Talk: As children communicate about math, they gain insights into their thinking and others. They reflect on their learning and organize and consolidate their thinking about math.

  17. Report Cards • N: Needs additional support/practice • S: Satisfactory progress towards standards • O: Performs above expectations (1st trimester is mostly review from First Grade-no O’s in academics)

  18. Homework Policy • 10-30 minutes of homework daily (including reading) • All homework will be assigned on Monday and due on Friday. Students will be responsible for writing their assignments on the Recording Sheet. • Homework will include: • Reading Log with activities (Please initial your child’s reading log.) • Math/Language Arts: (Math homework workbook will be left at home.) • All work sent home should be at each student’s independent level. Can be modified. • At no time is homework intended to cause stress and tears for students (or parents), so please let me know if you are having difficulties with homework. • Check over your child’s work each night
