2. Housekeeping • We are using many different items and equipment in the health occupations classroom. Every student must follow safety instructions before performing that skill. • At no time is a student allowed to get equipment out of the cabinet without obtaining permission first from the instructor. • If you do NOT understand a direction or lab procedure – ASK the Instructor • You must put the equipment away after use!

3. You have the right ……………. • Every student has the right to learn and is responsible to allow their fellow classmates to learn in a positive and supportive environment.

4. Expected student behavior: • Respect other people’s differences • Listen to each other • Help each other • Be supportive of each other • Demonstrate kindness

5. Behavior that ………. • Interferes with learning, • Interferes with safety, • Interferes with respect (bullying, teasing, racism, etc), WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

6. WILL NOT BE TOLERATED • Practical Jokes – are always against the rules … • Bullying • Drama …..

7. Classroom Policies • When you arrive: • Enter the classroom on time, quietly and dressed appropriately. • Be prepared. Have your textbook, PAPER, notebook, pencil ready.

8. Classroom Policies: • Be seated. Open your notebook and answer the problem of the day. Be prepared to discuss it.

9. Attire • Proper uniform is required in this classroom. • Wearing your scrubs, sneakers and ID, every day is part of your employability grade, which is worth 20% of your overall grade.

10. Consequences of Not wearing uniform • If you do not wear a complete uniform, you will not be able to participate in any of the day’s activities. • You will be assigned an alternate GRADED assignment that must be completed in addition to that day’s activities. • Continual offenses will result in parent conference & referral & loss of privileges (snack cabinet, field trips, etc..)

11. Show Respect by: • Classmates – do not interrupt, harass, tease or intimidate. • Instructor – shows up on time, prepares to teach, cooperate, and listen. • Yourself – respect your safety, personal space, health and education. • Environment – take care of the classroom including equipment, furniture. Keep the classroom clean and orderly. Stealing, defacing, or vandalizing WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

12. ENVIRONMENT • All students will be assigned clean up duties which they must complete before they leave. • Clean up assignments will be posted on a daily rotating basis. • Clean up assignments are part of your daily employability grade.

13. Expectations • Respect – for each other, the teacher and the classroom. • Do your part to keep our classroom clean. • When you have a question, wait until the end of the lesson or when the teacher asks for questions. • During lessons, you will take notes, do not get out of your seats or talk to your friends.

14. Attendance • Employability grade depends on your attendance. • This is 20% of your overall grade. • If you do not attend – you receive a zero that day. • All work needs to be completed. The student is expected to ask the teacher for missed work. Points will be deducted for lateness. After one week you will receive a zero. • Thought of the day is part of employability.

15. Participation • Every student is expected to participate in lessons, discussions, skills and activities. • Participation is part of your employability grade. • This is 20% of your overall grade.

16. Attention! • Heads are not permitted to be down on the desks at any time. • No sleeping at any time is allowed in the classroom. • You need to be working on classroom activities at all times. • Repeated offenses will result in discipline actions.

17. Assignments • Assignments are due when required. • Points will be deducted for lateness. After one week you will receive a zero. • Don’t forget to work on your projects and PDP books.

18. Food and beverages • This is a privilege that can be taken away at any time. • You are not permitted to get up during a lesson to get food/drink. • HOSA cabinet will be opened on arrival and 5 minutes prior to dismissal time. DO not ask at other times. • Hospitality cart, School Store and the Bakery are all privileges that are earned through employability.

ConsequencesFailure to meet the classroom philosophies, policies or expectations will result in discipline actions. • Personal warning • Removal from activity • Parent contact • Discipline referral • Student failing to comply to safety rules for any reason will immediately be removed from the activity.

20. Rewards • At the end of every day, students will receive an employability grade, that reflects their ability to meet the requirements expected of them (participation, assignments completed, uniform, notebook, etc.). • You will self evaluate daily. The instructor’s grade will be final.

21. Preventing back injuries • Low back injuries are a leading cause of employee sick time. • Accidents in manual handling of materials occur due to improper work habits, failure to lift properly or failure to wear protective equipment. • Training in proper methods of lifting is mandatory in most healthcare facilities.

22. Proper Lifting • Use Proper Lifting Procedures • You can't always avoid lifting, but there are ways to reduce the amount of pressure placed on the back when you do so. By bending the knees, you keep your spine in a better alignment, and you essentially take away the lever principle forces. Instead of using your back like a crane, you allow your legs to do the work.

23. Follow these steps when lifting: • 1. Take a balanced stance with your feet about a shoulder-width apart. One foot can be behind the object and the other next to it. • 2. Squat down to lift the object, but keep your heels off the floor. Get as close to the object as you can. • 3. Use your palms (not just your fingers) to get a secure grip on the load. Make sure you'll be able to maintain a hold on the object without switching your grip later.

24. Follow these steps when lifting: • 4. Lift gradually (without jerking) using your leg, abdominal and buttock muscles and keeping the load as close to you as possible. Keep your chin tucked in so as to keep a relatively straight back and neck line.

25. Follow these steps when lifting: • 5. Once you're standing, change directions by pointing your feet in the direction you want to go and turning your whole body. Avoid twisting at your waist while carrying a load. • 6. When you put a load down, use these same guidelines in reverse.

29. Standard Precautions • Preventing the spread of infection is called Standard Precautions. • Gowns, gloves, goggles, and masks are utilized to prevent contact with patient’s bodily fluids. • Standard Precautions must be used during contact with every patient. • All Blood and bodily fluids must be considered as potentially infectious for a blood borne virus.

30. Hand washing • The most important measure to prevent the spread of microorganisms is hand washing.

31. Hand washing Procedure • Wash hands using soap and water. • Need water to be running. • Use friction while washing your hands for 20-30 seconds. • Do not touch the inside of the sink while washing your hands. • Dry hands with a clean paper towel. • Turn off the faucet with a clean paper towel. • Throw away the used paper towels.

32. Remember to wash your hands: • Before and after contact with a patient. • After removing personal protective attire. • After using the restroom. • After handling contaminated items. • Before Eating.

33. Safety Test • Make this information part of your daily performance. You will be responsible for using this information. • Your will be evaluated daily on your performance. • There will be a written test.
