  1. Directions • From Cohen Studio turn left heading north on Main Street • At the street light turn right onto Pine Street • Soon after there will be a road on the left that goes down towards McLane and the football field, continue to follow this road until you cross over a little bridge • Walk up seventy steps of the Green Monster and on the left will be a set of five steps down • This is the destination located behind Miller • From Harder Hall turn right onto Pine Street • At the intersection turn left onto State Street • Walk down the sidewalk and when it branches off to the left to go down the Green Monster follow it (across from Barresi) • Go down thirty steps and on the right will be five more steps • This is the destination located behind Miller Note: On your way to the destination, take time to notice your surroundings, how many people did you pass?, were they in a hurry?, listen to the noises, observe the world around you.

  2. Arrival • Once at the location, sit down on the wall to the right and take a few minutes to realize the differences from the walk over to the location you are now in. • This area behind Miller is a place in which you can relax and get away from the busyness of the campus. • Try to think of the many different uses of this location. It is a prime location to think, to read, to draw, to listen. The possibilities are endless. Whatever you want this place to be, it can be.

  3. Endless Possibilities • While sitting on the wall, your mind is set free to wander. • There are endless possibilities in creativity here; every person’s mind wanders differently. • Some choose to make designs out of the rocks, while others use sharpies. • While you sit, make your own mark on the world; whether it is a design in the rocks or a design in your mind that will be put into action later, take this time to be different and be unique.

  4. Location Number 2 • The next step in this tour is to move from the wall to the corridor. • Just like before, take a few moments to observe the new territory. What is different about this location? • On the right side, there are doors and windows leading towards the college culture. There are people in the windows doing work and accomplishing tasks. • On the left side, there is a whole different view. The landscape is vast and calming. • In between each pillar, as you walk down towards the end, take time to pause at each break. Look at the differences in perspectives from each pillar. This view can be altered even by the slightest change in distance.

  5. Location Number 3 • At the end of the corridor, there is a set of concrete steps. Once at these steps, take another moment to sit and notice what you couldn’t or didn’t before. • There are many questions that can be asked about this spot. Why are these steps here? What is the reasoning? • From this spot, look around and examine the objects that you find. The grass looks soft and fluffy but does it feel that way. • Pick up some rocks and toss them at that steps and watch how they bounce off. They go in various directions keeping your eyes moving, looking and noticing new things.

  6. Coming to the End • Once you have examined all three locations, take one last moment to realize that you probably haven’t even noticed a quarter of the things surrounding you. • Not just in this one location are you missing things, but in the entire world. • As you walk back to wherever you may go examine everything one last time. • Look around to see what you didn’t notice the first time, and also look at the things you did notice but do a deeper examination. Think if there could be a deeper meaning to the simple objects around you. Did that can belong to a couple who shared it or was it a lonely old man’s. • Take another look at those simple objects that you looked at as everyday objects and see if there is a beauty to it an art form to it. Note: When you have finished this tour, you should not only have a greater understanding of the space around you, but of the world around you; you’ll have a new way to look at what is around you.
