  1. Today’s Message – II Cor. 11:1-15 A Different Jesus A Different Gospel A Different Spirit

  2. Introduction Paul’s Grave Concern 11:1-4 I hope you will put up with a little of my foolishness; but you are already doing that. 11:1

  3. I. Paul’s Grave Concern A. It was expressed with godly jealousy I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. v. 2

  4. Jealousy is ascribed to God as part of His nature Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. Ex. 34:14 Godly jealousy verses sinful jealousy Sinful jealousy is selfish, often possessive and controlling It can be very deceptive, dominating, cruel, revengeful and destructive.

  5. Godly jealousy has passionate desire for the welfare of the other person Godly jealousy is protective and is willing to lay down its life Godly jealousy will always speak truth

  6. A. It was expressed with godly jealousy B. It was expressed with the purest of motive I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to Him. V.2

  7. Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. I Cor. 6:10,11

  8. C. It was expressed with the deepest concernBut I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 11:3

  9. D. It was expressed because they were flirting with danger For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. 11:4

  10. 1. The danger comes from three sources a. A different Jesus b. A different gospel c. A different spirit

  11. A Different Jesus • Apollinarianism-- Jesus fully God -- partially or incompletely human • Arianism-- Jesus less than God -- more than human • Docetism-- Jesus wholly divine -- his humanity and suffering only seemed to be real • Ebionite-- Jesus regarded as prophet rather than divine Word of God

  12. Eutychianism-- Christ has but one nature, divine • Gnosticism -- Material is evil, Christ could not have come in the flesh Today’s different Jesus is mostly a rehash of the old heresies Mormon -- Jesus is one of many Gods – As man is, God once was, as God is man shall be

  13. Jehovah Witnesses -- Jesus was the first created angel, Michael. New age groups – Eastern based mysticism - Scientology, Ekancar, Wicca etc. – Jesus was a self realized man What does the bible say?

  14. Jesus is God - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. Jn. 1:1,14 Jesus is creator - For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him Col. 1:16

  15. Jesus is the only means of salvation Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Jesus is Savior, Lord, King, Name above all names, The Almighty, Alpha and Omega, Firstborn from the dead, Heir of all things, Mighty God, The Great God and Savior, the list goes on………

  16. A Different Gospel It contains a different Jesus who doesn’t satisfy the righteous demands of God It is always Jesus plus… keeping all the commands Being circumcised Being Baptized

  17. Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock . Acts 20:28,29

  18. What is the gospel? Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures I Cor. 15:1-4

  19. What is required of us concerning the gospel? I am not ashamed of the gospel , because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." Rom. 1:16-17

  20. Does the gospel require any works for salvation? Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval." 28 Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" 29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." Jn. 6:27-29

  21. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. Eph. 2:8,9 …know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified. Gal. 2:16

  22. You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Gal.3:1,2

  23. If the gospel requires no works for salvation, and faith is the only means whereby its benefits are realized, then what does God say about different gospels and the people that teach them?

  24. I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel, which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned Gal. 1:6-8

  25. What is the proper response to a false gospel? “you put up with it easily enough.” 11:4 Debate and dispute Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers: "Unless you are circumcised , according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved." 2 This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them Acts 15:1,2

  26. Warn and reject Warn a heretic once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. 11 You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned. Titus 3:10,11

  27. A Different Spirit The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. I Tim. 4:1,2

  28. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. Col. 2:8

  29. An anemic Christianity that is not virile enough to strive for the truth can never possess the nerve to die for it. A truth not worth defending very soon comes to be seen as a truth not worth professing Gary L. Johnson
