  1. I Notice, I Wonder… • What are some things that you notice about this image? • Or, what are some things that you wonder about this image?

  2. Opening Problem • On your half sheet, please complete. • Place both of these numbers and their opposites on both number lines: • -4 and 8

Positive and Negative Numbers in Real Life Situations I will be able to place positive and negative numbers on a horizontal and vertical number line, and identify the integer represented in a situation. So I can create a poster that models a real life scenario involving integers. I will know I got it when I can complete and compare my poster work to the other groups’ with least 80% accuracy. 6.NS.C.5, 6.NS.C.6a, 6.NS.C.6c

  4. Language Objective By the end of the lesson, I will be able to use the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing. I will be able to listen to and have an oral discussion with my partners on how to place positive and negative numbers on a horizontal and vertical number line. We will also create a real world example and identify the integer represented in a situation to complete our group poster. Academic math language vocabulary: positive, negative, vertical, horizontal, number line, integer.

Pg. 10 Circle the correct statement, and fix the other statement so it is correct. • A submarine is submerged 800 feet below sea level. • The depth of the submarine is -800 feet below sea level. • 800 feet below sea level can be represented by the integer -800. • The elevation of a coral reef with respect to sea level is given as -150 feet. • The coral reef is 150 feet below sea level. • The depth of the coral reef is -150 feet below sea level.

  9. Group Poster: 20 minutes • Create your own real-world situation involving: • Money • Temperature • Elevation • Other real world scenarios • Include: • Title (ex. Sea level, Temperature, Money) • Written situation based on title (use at least 2 points) • A BLANK vertical number line • Answer key (separate piece of paper stapled to back) • Picture (IF TIME)
