  1. Safety Tips For Crane Operation

  2. When working at a construction site, you need a crane to pick heavy loads from one place and keep them in other areas. Unfortunately, cranes can cause accidents if not handled properly. Therefore, it is imperative to take up crane operator course from a reliable source. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it has been noted that 297 deaths between the years 2011 to 2017 have occurred due to the mishandling of cranes. Therefore, if you do not want to face any accident at the construction site and want the work to be conducted at peace, here are some safety measures that you need to accommodate while operating a crane. Choose the right crane for the job To ensure that you are operating the cranes safely, you have to choose the crane correctly. Cranes are available either in a fixed or mobile format. However, if you are operating in an industrial belt, a fixed crane will suffice. Some of the popularly known mobile cranes are as follows – carry deck crane, crawler crane, all-terrain, and rough-terrain crane.

  3. Read the user manual before using the cranes Even after employing qualified and skilled personnel for using the crane, you have to remember that different cranes have different functions and features. Hence, it is imperative to go through the user manual and guide that will help you know the cranes’ operation correctly. The user manual will find important information about safety mechanisms, operator controls, load capacities, and stabilizers. Perform daily operator checks To ensure that the crane lasts long, a crane operator has to keep a constant eye on the crane and inspect it thoroughly. While checking the crane, a crane operator should focus on pre-start checks, engine startup checks, and safety system checks. Added to this, a series of hydraulic check systems should also be performed. Go through a proper crane operator course for optimum results.

  4. Avoid obstacles while traveling Before you start the crane and allow it to travel, make sure that the path it will travel is free from any obstacles. In addition, there should not be any hazardous component as it may give rise to an accident. Stabilize crane before rigging To prevent the crane from tipping during its operation, use outriggers or other stabilizing features. To know how far the outriggers can be extended, follow the guidelines of the manufacturer. Do not forget to use outrigger pads or crane pads below the outriggers. When placing outrigger pads, make sure there are no depressions or voids underneath.

  5. Rig the load correctly When the load is rigged correctly, there will be no falling of the objects. Similarly, the workers will be at ease. When rigging the load in a crane, take care of the hitching and the sling angle. Understand load radius If you want a crane to operate safely, you have to have a clear understanding of the working of a crane and the forces that work against it. For example, two things affect the load radius of a crane – the angle of the boom and the length of an extension. Conclusion If you are not confident enough about buying a crane and operating on your own, you can go ahead with hiring a professional.
