4. CHI Conference History • 2002-2003: Conference attendance declined approximately 40% from 2001 • 2002-2003: Conferences lost approximately 300K each • 2004-2005: Attendance stabilizes and costs reduced so conferences return ACM allocation and begin to return surpluses CHI 2006 • Model is changed (5 days), tutorials/courses folded into conference, broader outreach to communities while retaining traditional audience • Fees increased by around $200 • Attendance increases (up 50% from 2003), satisfaction continues at traditional levels (90% report that conference was worth the money) Status of Upcoming Conferences • 2007: Submissions rate remains high in traditional areas, some new areas show strong growth (notes, experience, tutorials); sponsorship exceeds budget and still growing; registration opens at end of month • 2008: Florence, Italy - committee formation and budget underway
