The National Map A Briefing for the NGAC

The National Map is a comprehensive geospatial resource that contributes to the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). It includes eight data layers such as orthoimagery, hydrography, land cover, and transportation. The map provides public domain data to support analysis, modeling, and other applications. The National Map is built on partnerships and standards, and is supported by USGS Geospatial Liaisons who foster communication and provide expert advice on geospatial data and technology.

The National Map • The National Map contributes to the NSDI • The National Map includes eight data layers: orthoimagery, hydrography, land cover, geographic names, elevation, transportation, structures, and boundaries • Public domain data to support • USGS topographic maps at 1:24,000-scale • Products and services at multiple scales and resolutions • Analysis, modeling and other applications at multiple scales and resolutions • The National Map is built on partnerships and standards

USGS Geospatial Liaisons • Cultivate and maintain long-term relationshipswith partners and develop partnerships and supporting agreements for NGPO programs • Foster and improve communicationabout NGP and the National Map • Advise and Consult on Geospatial Data and Technology • Your “local face” of the National Map

Liaisons Support their Communities • USGS Geospatial liaisons serve as Federal representatives on over 200 Councils and Committees, mostly GIS related • Liaisons serve as members of 39 state GIS steering committees or GIS councils, and numerous local and regional bodies • Liaisons also serve as members or chairs of multiple thematic sub-committees under the state councils, especially for elevation and imagery where USGS has A-16 responsibility • Many liaisons lead or support Federal GIS coordination groups in states and regions • Councils serve as a forum for GIS partnerships and framework data coordination
