Explore the complex factors that led to the outbreak of World War I, including nationalism, militarism, and imperialism. European nations experienced intense rivalry and feelings of inferiority which fueled their desire to outdo one another. The rise of powerful nations, the tangled alliances such as the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente, and the instability in the Balkans set the stage for conflict. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand triggered the war, as alliances were activated, leading to a widespread escalation into what became a global conflict.

The Causes • Nationalism: wanting to be better than others as a country. • Militarism: thinking that a truly great country is having a powerful military. • Imperialism: wanting for more lands than others nations do. • Tangled Alliances
The Steady Rise of Nationalism • Nationalism: European nations had conflicts and felt inferior to each other—wanted to be better. • Rise in the Great Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, France. • Britain leading country among Europe • Others wanted to be better than Britain • Germany challenged Britain • Balkans wanting independence.
Imperialism • Like in chp.11—European nations fought for more lands/colonies. Want more colonies than other countries do. • Ex) Germany and France fought for Morocco • continued to compete for more lands that made them clash and propelled them into war.
Growth of Militarism • The European nations believed that having a powerful military = having a strong country • Tried to be like Great Britain • Great Britain had the greatest army.
Triple Alliance • 1870’s • Otto van Bismarck (Germany) thought France will revenge • Forms a Triple Alliance to isolate France :Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy • Bismarck brought Russia in made it unstable • Kaiser Wilhelm II forces Bismarck to give up. • Terminates the treaty with Russia ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrVYiw4KI8o
Triple Entente • In response, Russia forms an alliance with France • As Kaiser keeps Germany developing, Britain is challenged • Great Britain forms the Triple Entente with France and Russia **http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z09RG0kFm9U
Balkans, “powder keg” of Europe • 1900’s- Ottoman Empire declines and Balkans want independence. • Others already formed nations: Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia • New nations want to extend their lands (nationalism) • Ex) Serbia wanted all of Slavs on the Balkan region. • Serbia reach Russia (success) and Austria (fail) • Austria annexed Bosnia & Herzegovina (two largest Balkan areas) • Serbia and Russia backs up by Austria’s force
The Last Trigger • The Austro-Hungarian throne, Franz Ferdinand, was murdered on a visit to Bosnia • Killer was a Serbian member of the Black Hand • Austria used this as excuse to attack—ultimatum • Serbia’s request for international conference was rejected and Austria just attacked • At same time, Russia took action and entire Europe was alarmed-> WAR BEGAN
