The Art and Science of Teaching The Journey 2010 – District joined Marzano Academy Administration and selected staff attended 2011 – District read Art and Science of TeachingCertified and non-certified through PLC time 2012 – Staff began to implement tenets of Marzano’s research - writing essential learnings and proficiency scales - PLC teams began class walkthroughs - Evaluation tool revision and implementation

  3. The Art and Science of Teaching The Impetus In 2010, WPS district administrators and school improvement team members finalized the district’s five-year plan to improve student achievement. We had to change the way we did business.

The Art and Science of Teaching The Focus Improving Student Achievement and Teacher Effectiveness Effectiveness surveys (HumanEx) Brain research trainings (Dr. Dennison Bhola) Created and trained Data Team leaders Implemented reading and math intervention programs Infusion of technology (computers, Learning Lab, SmartBoards) Staff trainings (Anita Archer, 2nd cadre to Marzano Academy) That’s a lot!

Do: Keep the observing group small Observe only 10-15 minutes Focus on Marzano elements Reflect as a group after observation Participate at least once a quarter Don’t: Evaluate colleague Share information outside of the group

  13. Staff members were given their own copy of the district’s evaluation form and encouraged to reflect and rate themselves by Oct 1.

  14. Staff members will be encouraged to use their copy of the evaluation form as a journal; principal and teacher will review after each observation.
