In this lesson, you will explore the creative use of distorts and filters to enhance text in graphic design. Learn how to apply glowing text effects using Gaussian blur, manipulate text along a path for dynamic layouts, and experiment with various distorts like curve bends and winds to create unique designs. Follow step-by-step activities that challenge you to combine these effects in engaging ways, ensuring your text is not only visually appealing but also impactful. Unleash your creativity with these powerful graphic design techniques!

Lesson 4– Objectives How to use distorts and filters Using effects on text Text along a path
The text tool When you add text the following options appear. These allow you to edit the size, colour and style of the font. It also allows you to change the spacing between letters! Change the values to see their effect on the screen.
Glowing text The glowing text effect is very easy to achieve. It uses two layers. One layer is heavily “blurred” while the other is not touched. This gives a “glowing” effect.
The components The text on the left is blurred. This is done by something known as a filter. Specifically a Gaussian blur. You can control how heavy a blur is using the options.
The components 5 15 35 60 The blur values are shown above. The higher the value the heavier the blur. Gaussian blur is a great way of smoothing out noisy pictures or to create glowing effects.
Distorts The filter menu contains many types of distorts which can produce some interesting effects. The next few slides show the results of a few distorts on some text. I have changed the default values in order to get the images. It is suggested that you play around with them to see what they can do!
Activity Divide a image into 4 and add 4 bits of text. Now apply a different distort to each and finally add some extra effects to make the image interesting. Hint using blend could produce some interesting results!
Text along a path Text along a path can be a bit tricky. Sometimes it is easier to use curve bend distort! The first step is to draw the path you want to align your text to.
Step 3 – Add a new layer Select the menu item “selection -> from path” Then draw over the selection with a brush. If nothing draws, add a new layer!
Step 4 - Deselect Go to menu selection -> select none Delete / hide the path (this is done in the path dialogue) Done!
Activity Create a new image. Add a single sentence. Make sure it fits on a single line and takes up the width of the screen. Try to make the text go along a curve.
Activity Find a title / logo (which has text) on the internet which you like. It must stand out! Try and create your own version of it with your name as the text! Do not worry if the font style does not match perfectly. Do not choose something too simple as well. The best way to learn is to give yourself a challenge.
