  2. Objectives • Review TOEFL test sections -- overview • Review guidelines for giving a TOEFL prep workshop • Discuss workshop ideas for the Speaking & Listening sections • Share resources and strategies for TOEFL prep • Plan a 1-hour workshop on ONE test-taking skill

AN OVERVIEW OF THE EXAM: READING 3-5 passages 12-14 questions / passage 60-100 minutes TIPS SKIM to get the main idea of each paragraph (title + 1st sentence of each paragraph) SCAN for key words to answer detail & negative fact questions No more than 1-2 minutes / question Answer all questions: for difficult questions, guess & go back later using the “Review” button at the end

AN OVERVIEW OF THE EXAM: LISTENING Listening tasks come in sets of 3 (two or three sets) 1 conversation: 3-5 minutes between a man and a woman 1 lecture: 4-6 minutes of a professor delivering a speech by him- or herself 1 discussion lecture: 4-6 minutes of a professor interacting with students Questions for each task: 1 conversation: 5 questions 1 lecture: 6 questions 1 discussion lecture: 6 questions Ten minutes to complete each set of 17 questions

AN OVERVIEW OF THE EXAM: SPEAKING Independent Speaking Question 1: Familiar topics Preparation time: 15 seconds Response time: 45 Seconds Question 2: Expressing Opinion Preparation time: 15 seconds Response time: 45 Seconds Integrated Speaking Questions 3: Read/ Listen/ Speak Preparation time: 30 seconds Response time: 60 seconds Question 4: Read/ Listen/ Speak Preparation time: 30 seconds Response time: 60 seconds Questions 5: Listen/ Speak Preparation time: 20 seconds Response time: 60 seconds Question 6: Listen/ Speak Preparation time: 20 seconds Response time: 45 seconds

AN OVERVIEW OF THE EXAM: WRITING Independent Writing 30 minutes to write Ideal word count: 400 words 5 Question Types: Integrated Writing: Read / Listen / Write 3 minutes to read Listen to 2-minute lecture on the same topic Reading passage appears again 20 minutes to write (summarize & explain different perspective) Ideal word count: 250 words

Your turn… • Plan a 1-hour workshop focusing on ONE test-taking skill. • Guidelines: • Objectives: What skill will the teachers leave with? • Materials: What do you need? • Warm Up: How will you introduce the test-taking skill? • TOEFL Application: How/when do you use this skill on the TOEFL? • Practice: What activities will you do? • Wrap Up: Will you give them resources? How can teachers continue studying independently?
