  1. AAVSO LPV Section Report Mike Simonsen Fall 2008

  2. Initial plans • Draft a science advisor • Laslo Kiss has agreed to advise • Determine a core set of program stars • First pass made using spreadsheets created by Matt • Set up the LPV Section wiki • Outline objectives and projects

  3. Core Program Stars Selection Criteria Stars for which we have excellent light curves, and       that we want the observer community to continue observing to       make sure these light curves will extend well into the future        Stars for which we do not have good light curves, but that       have active publication histories that suggest amateurs could       make effective contributions were they encouraged to do so        Stars for which we do not have good light curves or       substantial publication histories, but that we find may be       worth observing or highlighting in some way        Stars for which we have little or no data, that are not       extensively discussed in literature, and that we can safely       "drop" from our program -- not necessarily discourage       observations, but indicate there is little about these       worth pursuing by amateurs.

  4. The Spreadsheets Star name Number of observations in the AAVSO database Number of references in the literature

  5. LPV Results • If we set the n observation cutoff at 5000 • 250 Miras • 25 SRA • 60 SRB • 15 SRC • 10 SRD • 25 L mixed types, mostly LB • Total 385

  6. Wiki in Wikimedia format

  7. Projects and Ideas for the Wiki • Building The AAVSO LPV Program • LPV Library of Essential Papers • New Research • Campaigns and Observing Projects • Software Solutions • Observing Tips • Data-mining the AAVSO International Database

  8. Next steps? • Establish leadership • Needs active participation and monitoring by science advisor • Leadership defines objectives and means • Finish the set up of wiki- enable file upload, require log in for editing, etc, • Publicize the effort • Draft specific volunteer administrative team to get things rolling and maintain progress • Encourage and guide volunteers and observers
