  1. Physical Education Unit Plan By Justin Finley

  2. Introduction • In this unit plan, I intend to teach the kids about several different sports. I will describe the origin of the sport itself, the rules, and also the proper techniques on how to play the sport. I will do this by using visual and verbal examples.

  3. Analyze Learners • The age group that I am going to be focusing will be from the ages of 12 to 18. This spans from kids in middle school to the older kids in high school. There will be no special requirements for this specific class. The students that will be in my classes will have already been involved in some type of Physical Education classes before have entered my level.

  4. State Objectives • Standard 1: Movement Forms (PE.S.1) The intent of this standard is development of the movement/physical skills needed to enjoy participation in physical activities. Mastering movement fundamentals establishes a foundation to facilitate continued motor skill acquisition and gives students the capacity for successful and advanced levels of performance to further the likelihood of participation on a daily basis. • Standard 2: Development of Motor Skills (PE.S.2)The intent of this standard is for students to establish patterns of regular participation in meaningful physical activity. This standard connects what is done in the physical education class with the lives of students outside of the classroom. While participation within the physical education class is important, what the student does outside the physical education class is critical to developing an active, healthy lifestyle that could help prevent a variety of health problems among future generations of adults. Students make use of the skills and knowledge learned in physical education class as they engage in regular physical activity outside of the physical education class. • Standard 3: Physical Activity (PE.S.3) The intent of this standard is to develop an awareness of the intrinsic values and benefits of participation in physical activity that provides personal meaning. Physical activity provides opportunities for self-expression and social interaction and can be enjoyable, challenging, and fun. These benefits develop self-confidence and promote positive self image, thereby enticing people to continue participation in activity throughout the lifespan. • Standard 4: Physical Fitness (PE.S.4) The intent of this standard is for students to have both the ability and willingness to accept responsibility for personal fitness leading to an active, health lifestyle. Students develop higher levels of basic fitness and physical competence as needed for many work situations and active leisure participation. Health-related fitness components include cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. • Standard 5: Responsible Personal and Social Behavior (PE.S.5) The intent of this standard is achievement of self- initiated behaviors that promote personal and group success in activity settings. These include safe practices, adherence to rules and procedures, etiquette, cooperation and teamwork, ethical behavior in sport, and positive social interaction. Key to this standard is developing respect for individual similarities and differences through positive interaction among participants in physical activity. Similarities and differences include characteristics of culture, ethnicity, motor performance, disabilities, and physical characteristics.

  5. Media/Materials • For this unit, I will need the following materials: A baseball, bats, gloves, a whiffle ball bat and ball, a basketball, and colored tape, As far as media goes, I will need a classroom that has a computer and internet source so that I can show clips of the different sports and the proper techniques.

  6. Utilize Media • The first website is: http://www.pecentral.org/lessonideas/ViewLesson.asp?ID=798. This website gives ideas on certain types of drills that will enhance the player’s basketball skills, incorporating teamwork and skills the students have learned in the past. The second website is http://members.tripod.com/~pazz/lesson.html. This website simply lists a lot of different games that can be played in gym class, as well as the rules, and the material needed. The third website I used is http://www.teach-nology.com/lessons/lsn_pln_view_lessons.php?action=view&cat_id=7&lsn_id=14924. This site gives a great breakdown of the rules and the purpose for teaching the students softball. The fourth website I found was http://www.lessonplanspage.com/PEJH.htm. This website was great for coming up with different games outside the realm of regular sport and also the rules for these different sports and activities. All of the websites above would be great resources for the students due to the fact that if we are not able to get to all of the different types of activities, they could go to these websites and look up the rules and could play the games outside of the school environment. I used all of these websites to show the players some new games they might not have ever played before, and also some drills to sharpen the skills of the students.

  7. Learner Participation • In the following two weeks of class, I will have a detailed unit plan on what we will be doing. On day one of the unit plan, we will discuss the topic of baseball. We will start out in the classroom on the first day, and talk briefly about the history of baseball, and the rules of the game. We will then move to the gym where I will show the students the proper techniques or how to throw, catch, and field the baseball. I will then show them proper batting techniques. I will show them how to rotate their hips, keep their eye on the ball, etc. The next day will we start by properly stretching and warming up. We will perform some basic drills and go over strategies of the game. On day three, we will divide up into teams and play a scrimmage game. We will not be using live pitching due to the fact that everyone will not be adapted in time. For this, we will be using a tee. Instead of real baseballs, we will be using whiffle balls and bats for the safety of the class. On day four, I will once again divide the class into teams and we will scrimmage to see how well the students have improved. • The second half of the unit plan will go on a similar schedule as did the first half. The sport this time will be basketball and we will begin by the class gathering in the classroom and by using the internet, I will show them clips of proper techniques, as well as the origin of basketball. I would follow this by taking them into the gym and physically showing them how to dribble, pass, and shoot. The following day, I will have them perform various dribbling, passing, and shooting drills using cones and colored tape to add a small level of difficulty. Next, I will show the students the different types of defense that can be played. On the final day, I will let the students scrimmage each other and give them a chance to see what they have learned. • In Physical Education, it may be a little bit easier to keep the students attention than in other classes for obvious reasons. PE is one of those things where you are always doing activities and doing competitive things to keep kids interested. I would keep them very interested by coming up with different types of rules and fun games inside of the well known traditional sports. Keeping things changed and keeping the kids on their toes will be the key to making sports and activities fun and interested.

  8. Assessment • The achievement in my class will be evaluated in several different ways. First of all, the students need to be dressed and participate everyday to get full credit. Then, throughout the semester, I will divide the students up into small groups and give them small tasks. I will ask them to make up some new rules for different games, and the class will play the games under the student’s new rules. I will also ask the students individually to perform a simple physical task that they have learned throughout the week
