  1. Whatsa Matter? Do Now Modern chemistry is defined as the study of matter. What do you think matter is? Name 2 things that are matter and 2 things that are not matter.

  2. Some Textbook Definitions • Matter is anything that has mass and volume. • Matter is anything of substance in the known universe. • Matter is anything that takes up space.

  3. So what about energy? • Technically, energy is the “ability of a system to do work or supply heat” • Informally, it is the movement of or effect of or on matter

  4. Check-in Which of the following can be classified as matter according to our definition? • Beam of sunlight • Your breath • An automobile • Rain • An idea • Sadness

So what about FIRE? • The ancient Greeks and alchemists thought it was an element. • (They also considered earth, air, and water to be elements.) • Fire is made up of many different substances, so it is not an element, fire is a mixture of hot gases. • Flames are the result of a chemical reaction, primarily between oxygen in air and a fuel producing carbon dioxide, steam, light, and heat. • If the flame is hot enough, the gases are ionized and become yet another state of matter: plasma.

What the heck is plasma? • closely related to gases • the particles are neither atoms nor molecules, but electrons and positive ions. • Plasmas can be formed at very high temperatures • The resulting particles can then move freely, like the particles in a gas. • found on Earth in the outermost atmosphere • probably more prevalent in the universe than all of the other three states of matter. • The stars, comets' tails, and the aurora borealis are all plasmas. • Because their particles are electrically charged, plasmas are greatly influenced by electric and magnetic fields.
