  1. A few thoughts on the short and medium term…. Now and the next 6 months What then ? What is important for the early LHC ? Possible roles for us.

  2. Where are we at the moment ? Split SUSY – R-hadrons Advantages: Currently a very hot topic and we’re in ’on the ground’ : Day one physics search : Gain expertise in all detector areas except vertex finding : Should lead to at least one publication soon. Disadvantages: Only one of many exotic theories. : Stable charged particles alone not a hot topic for the LHC.

  3. Short Term Plans for the Gluino R-hadrons Results for Rome for gluino R-hadrons (6/05) Tevatron discovery potential (TeV4LHC and paper) (9/05) ATLAS note and publication (10/05) Magnus’ thesis (10/05)

  4. Wish list • A physics area which is • Important/timely • Slightly less competitive than the Olympics • Flows naturally from our commissioning work • Exploits links with Lund/Uppsala phenomenologists • Possible at low lumi • Provides a search and a measurement

  5. LHC in the first 12 months Myriad sources: hep-ex/0308003 (Bruno), hep-ph/0504221 (Gianotti,Mangano)+… Short run in 2007 + shutdown + 7 months in 2008 Not optimal detector – missing silicon layer and endcap Pessimistic : 100pb-1 Optimistic 10fb -1

  6. A few early LHC topics

  7. Further exploitation of gluino R-hadrons and Split-SUSY Move to GEANT4 (available mid-summer) and redo gluino r-hadron R-hadron decay – eg Decay of stopped r-hadron in non-beam time Stable charged particles predicted in many models. Stop R-hadron (GMSB) Stau (GMSB), Chargino (GMSB, Split SUSY) Enough uncovered areas for preparatory studies and day 1 exploitation. Useful links with T. Sjöstrand. Mostly muon-dependent SUSY and Stable Charged Particles

  8. Missing Et Missing Et crucial for Discovery and quantification of SUSY + SM processes Instrumental effects: calo. non-linearities, cracks Energy scale critical. Should/can we become missing Et experts ?

  9. Top Production Early, crucial measurement Use tt for jet energy scale and b-tagging Useful for background: -Measure ttjj for irreducible ttbb for later ttH search Use top in SUSY search – stop ? Transfer D0 expertise ?

  10. Tests of QCD (1) Charged particle spectra: pt,eta, multiplicities, Correlations Understanding minimum bias sample/mi crucial for later precision work Interplay of soft and hard QCD Of interest to Lund/Uppsala Of large interest to ATLAS at the beginning

  11. Tests of QCD (2) Multi-jet production tests higher order QCD at the highest scales. Sensitive to new physics Constrains pdfs Jet energy scale crucial

  12. Manpower Commissioning responsibilities will take priority Fractions of people available but fraction could be tiny Dave,Erik,Sten,Kerstin, Elin,Student X (starting 2005),Student Y (starting 2006) ? Student Z (starting 2007) ? + D0 folk ???? + Joergen ????? Realistically, commissioning will squeeze physics terribly. How do we maintain continuity and build expertise ?

  13. Closer Collaboration ITEP-Moscow Useful early collaboration with ITEP (Ytsen) Expect more students from ITEP to join in. Awaiting Swedish Institute decision (possible 400,000 SEK) Could provide6 month stays for several students Scandinavia Existing useful link with Lund (M. Karlsson) Further exploitation of Nordic links Genuinely build up common area of analysis/expertise with eg. Lund/Bergen ?
