  1. EPIC VOLUNTEER Atwater Elementary School Sample Student

  2. What was your project? • My Project was through Epic • I was a volunteer at Atwater Elementary School • I had to teach 1st Graders

  3. Why did you decide on it? • My Little sister attends Atwater Elementary • I graduated from Atwater Elementary • I know the Principal and I knew that she would agree to letting me volunteer.

  4. What was your plan? • My plan was to get 1st graders familiar with using computers. • I believe that kids should start using computers when they go to 1st grade. • To see who they interacted better with, a teen teaching them or a real teacher.

  5. How did your accomplishments measure up to your plan? • Kids enjoy to spend most of their time with teens than with adults. • The 1st graders enjoy using computers, and learned how to play counting games in the computer. • By 2nd grade they should be able to use a computer more efficiently 1 2 3 4 5

  6. What kind of schedule did you keep? • My Schedule was the same every week except for the first and last week. • 10/19/2007-> 8:10am-11:10am (3 hours) • 10/26/2007-> 8:10am-12:10pm (4 hours) • 11/02/2007-> 8:10am-12:10pm (4 hours) • 11/09/2007-> 8:10am-12:10pm (4 hours) • 11/16/2007-> 8:10am-10:10am (2 hours) Total 17 hours

  7. Did life intervene with your plan? • My little sister was distracted in class because I was there • The last day of volunteer work I had to work which is why I did not volunteer more hours. • I tried to do as many hours as I can because there was not enough time to complete 16 hours, due to the Thanksgiving break.

  8. What accomplishment are you most proud of? • I am proud of the way the kids interacted with me teaching them. • I feel like I did something beneficial to their lives, because they are going to use computers all their lives.

  9. What would you still like to improve? • I would like to improve on my hours of volunteering. If I volunteered more then the students would have learned more. • I would also like to improve the social skills that the students have, they talk very little overall. • I would like to get the students to learn more than just games in the computer, maybe help develop their typing skills.

  10. What was the best thing about doing your project? • Working with the little kids • Interacting with my little sister in a more professional place. (She never listens at home, only at school) • Teaching kids something that they will use the rest of their life.

  11. What was the most frustrating thing? • The most frustrating thing was getting my Little sister to focus and volunteer, she developed a sense of shyness while I was there. • Another frustrating thing was getting the kids to follow correct instructions, they usually comprehend the wrong thing.

  12. What did you learn about yourself as a learner during this process? • I learned that I need to have more patience when dealing with kids. • I learned that I would rather work with younger people, because they always see you as a role model, so they pay more attention to what you have to say. • I learned that hands on experience helps learn the subject faster.
