  3. C) Battle of the Coral Sea 1) Airplanes 2) Prevent expansion to Australia D) Battle of Midway 1) Admiral Chester Nimitz 2) 6/3/42-destroyed Japanese fleet 3) avenged Pearl Harbor

  4. II. Allies go on the Offensive • Island Hopping -MacArthur-returned to Philippines -islands at a time B) Japanese Defense -kamikaze-suicide planes

  5. C) Iwo Jima -critical base for US to reach Japan -20,700 Japanese in trenches and tunnels -6000 marines died -only 200 Japanese survived D) Okinawa -Americans-7600 -Japanese-110000 -potential million American lives lost when invading Japan

  6. III. The Atomic Bomb Ends the War • Manhattan Project -led by J. Robert Oppenheimer -600k worked on it, few knew its purpose -7/16/45-first successful explosion-NM -Truman-surrender or face destruction

  7. B) Hiroshima and Nagasaki 8/6/45- “Little Boy” levels Hiroshima 8/9/45- “Fat Boy” levels half of Nagasaki Emperor-END WAR 9/2/1945-Officially ended

  8. IV. Rebuilding Begins • Yalta-Feb. 1945 1) Stalin-military zones in Germany a. FDR-need Soviet support in Japan b. support for UN 2) Temporary division of Germany -free elections in Eastern Europe -Stalin join conference in San Fran for UN -Stalin-help with Japan

  9. B) Nuremberg Trials -12/24 top Nazis executed -200 more tried and prisoned -many escaped C) Occupation of Japan -7 Japanese including Tojo sentenced to death -7 year American occupation -democratic constitution-MacArthur Constitution
